Who is in Yellowstone Season 5?
Season 5 opens with John Dutton newly sworn in as Montana’s governor, bringing the family’s ranch conflict into state politics. The central cast includes the Dutton family, its ranch allies, and figures with competing interests in the land and its future.
| Performer | Character | Season 5 role |
|---|---|---|
| Kevin Costner | John Dutton | Dutton patriarch and newly elected governor of Montana. |
| Luke Grimes | Kayce Dutton | John’s youngest surviving son and a livestock agent; husband to Monica. |
| Kelly Reilly | Beth Dutton | John’s daughter and the family’s business strategist. |
| Wes Bentley | Jamie Dutton | John’s lawyer son and a political rival within the family. |
| Cole Hauser | Rip Wheeler | The Duttons’ enforcer and a key ranch figure. |
| Kelsey Asbille | Monica Long Dutton | Kayce’s wife. |
| Gil Birmingham | Chief Thomas Rainwater | Leader of the fictional Broken Rock Reservation. |
These roles give the main conflict its shape: John’s new office, the family’s business and ranch interests, and the community interests represented by Rainwater.

Which principal cast members return?
Paramount Network’s February 3, 2022 Season 5 announcement named these principal ensemble performers as returning:
- Kevin Costner
- Luke Grimes
- Kelly Reilly
- Wes Bentley
- Cole Hauser
- Kelsey Asbille
- Brecken Merrill
- Jefferson White
- Forrie Smith
- Denim Richards

The announcement is an official baseline for the principal ensemble, not a census of every performer who appears over the season’s episodes. Character descriptions above focus on the core family and political conflict; the announcement does not itself assign a character description to each name on its returning list.
Who is new to the Season 5 regular cast?
Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly were elevated to series regulars in Paramount Network’s Season 5 announcement. A promotion to regular status does not mean either performer was making a first appearance in Yellowstone; the announcement establishes their new billing status, not that they were new to the show.
- Jen Landon: promoted to series regular for Season 5.
- Kathryn Kelly: promoted to series regular for Season 5.
The sources cited here do not provide a full episode-level roster of new, recurring, and guest characters, so this guide does not label additional characters as Season 5 debuts.
