Spoilers for the complete film: Beatrice is the clearest practical winner. Disguised as Forbes, she manipulates the game, escapes in Nikki’s body with the body-swapping machine, and has already moved Dennis’s trust-fund money offshore. Shelby gets her own body back, but Cyrus is left facing blame for Reuben and Brooke’s deaths. The ending gives Beatrice the strongest material outcome, not a moral victory.
Who is in whose body at the end?
The apparent Forbes is actually Beatrice, who has been using her brother’s body and controlling the machine. The final body assignments and fates are:
| Person | Body occupied at the end | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Shelby | Shelby | Returns to her own body. |
| Cyrus | Cyrus | Returns to his own body, but is left to face blame for the deaths. |
| Maya | Brooke | Remains in Brooke’s body. |
| Nikki | Reuben | Remains in Reuben’s body. |
| Dennis | Forbes | Remains in Forbes’s body. |
| Beatrice | Nikki | Escapes with the machine and suitcase. |
| Reuben | Dennis | Dies after falling from the balcony. |
| Brooke | Maya | Dies after falling from the balcony. |
As Megan McCluskey’s TIME ending explainer recounts, Reuben and Brooke fall from a crumbling balcony while occupying Dennis’s and Maya’s bodies. Their deaths turn the survivors’ competing suspicions into a struggle over what happened and who will be held responsible.
How Beatrice engineers the outcome
Beatrice’s deception is the key to the ending: she has been operating from Forbes’s body and steering the group toward revenge. Her motive reaches back to the past incident involving Dennis, who hooked up with Beatrice when she was in high school and dating Nikki. Forbes and Dennis fought, and Beatrice later ended up in a mental hospital, according to TIME.

After the deaths, Dennis, still occupying Cyrus’s body at that point, calls the police and says Cyrus pushed the pair. That accusation leaves Cyrus to take the blame. Beatrice, meanwhile, drives away in Nikki’s body with the suitcase and machine. TIME also reports that she has transferred Dennis’s trust-fund money into an offshore account.
What does the final scene mean?
Beatrice’s escape is more than a last-minute twist: it shows that the machine grants access to another person’s body without making its user’s motives any less dangerous. Earlier, in flashback, Beatrice describes the appeal of switching bodies as a way to experience other people’s lives. By leaving with the device, she preserves the ability to keep doing so—and to control what happens next.

There are several ways to measure who “wins”: Beatrice gets away with the machine and money; Shelby regains her body; Cyrus faces the immediate consequences. On control and material gain, Beatrice comes out ahead. That does not make her the story’s moral hero: the ending leaves the cost of her revenge with the people still trapped in the wrong bodies and the person blamed for the deaths.
Why the body-swapping game matters beyond the twist
Writer-director Greg Jardin told Netflix Tudum that the premise let the filmmakers explore “the artificial intimacy presented online,” including social media, beauty standards, and online lifestyles, particularly in relation to a strained couple. Shelby’s fixation on Nikki’s body and Cyrus’s attention to other women therefore connect the puzzle mechanics to the film’s concerns about appearance and the lives people imagine through others.

Executive producer Colman Domingo described the deeper unease as “the horror of the soul.” The phrase fits an ending where outward identities can change while desire, resentment, and responsibility remain central to the danger. Netflix Tudum notes that its interview was edited and condensed.
