In December 2024, Yellowstone executive producer Christina Voros told The Hollywood Reporter that the series finale would be surprising on first viewing but, looking back, would feel inevitable. Her comments were a pre-broadcast preview, not a review of the episode, and the schedule reported at the time, a December 15, 2024 broadcast on Paramount Network, is historical. This article explains what Voros said, what the reporting established about the Dutton family’s storyline, and how to read a producer’s prediction made before a finale aired.
What Voros said about the finale
Voros, who worked on the show as an executive producer and said she knew its characters and story closely, described the ending as a conclusion she did not see coming. Her central point was that a strong ending can feel unexpected at first and then make sense in hindsight. In the interview she put it this way:
“I was surprised and I didn’t see it coming. I think the conclusion to any great story is both surprising and inevitable, but you don’t realize it was inevitable until you get there. It all makes sense looking backward. But looking forward, you never would have seen it coming.”
That quotation is verbatim from the reported interview. Attribute the words to Voros and the interview to The Hollywood Reporter. Yahoo Entertainment carried the syndicated coverage, published December 9, 2024, and a companion piece on December 10, 2024 framed it as the finale tease.

The storyline Voros connected to the finale
The interview tied the late-season story to Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, and to the broader question of what would happen to the Dutton family and their ranch. The reporting framed those family and land stakes as the core of the ending. Voros’s comments about Kayce were the most concrete element of the preview; she did not, in the coverage available, lay out a plot outcome in detail.
How to read a pre-finale prediction
A producer’s preview is useful for understanding intent, but it is not evidence about how the finale played out. Three distinctions help:
Rank #2
- Genre: TV Drama
- Number of Discs: 21
- Number of Tracks: 0
- Playback Duration: 1176
- Rating: NR
- Prediction versus outcome. “Surprising and inevitable” is Voros’s assessment before broadcast. It was not a guarantee that every viewer would find the ending surprising or satisfying.
- Preview versus retrospective. Reviews and commentary written after the episode aired are a different kind of source. The reporting behind this article does not include post-finale analysis, so it cannot say how critics or audiences received the ending.
- Schedule versus current availability. The December 15, 2024 Paramount Network date was the scheduled broadcast reported at the time. It does not establish current viewing options, which change over time.
What is and is not established
- Established: Voros described the finale as surprising in the moment and inevitable in retrospect, in an interview reported in December 2024.
- Established: the interview linked the ending to Kayce Dutton and the future of the Dutton family and ranch.
- Not established here: the actual plot of the finale, its critical reception, its audience results, or the current status of any spin-off or continuation.
Readers looking for the finale’s content or reaction should consult post-broadcast reviews published after December 15, 2024, and the series’ official distribution information for current access.
Taken together, Voros’s comments describe a finale built to feel earned on reflection rather than telegraphed in advance. Whether it succeeded in that aim is a question her preview could not answer.
