Wes Bentley suggested viewers might get what they wanted in an unexpected way—but “Not what you think” is not verified as a verbatim cast quote. After the finale aired, Luke Grimes called its script “beautiful,” “profound” and “heartbreaking.”
What the cast said before season 5B
In a TVLine interview published November 7, 2024, the actors offered a few distinct clues about the returning episodes: their emotional register, a change in tone and how little some cast members knew about the broader story. These were previews, not a full account of the finale.
Intense, emotional episodes
Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, described the episodes as “intense, full-on…” Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, called them “emotional” and “raw.” Reilly also said “the show has had a big shift, and within that, it’s been sort of reenergized,” pointing to new material for the story to explore. TVLine’s November 7, 2024 cast preview contains the interview.
Some cast members had redacted scripts
Gil Birmingham, who plays Thomas Rainwater, said, “We’ve received redacted scripts for the first time, so we don’t really know the storyline outside of what our characters are doing.” That explains why cast members could speak to the feel of their work without laying out the season’s full plot.

A surprise was teased, but not as an exact headline quote
Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie Dutton, said, “There’s a striking difference in tone.” He also suggested viewers could get what they wanted in a way they did not expect. That supports the idea of an unexpected turn, but the reviewed TVLine reporting does not establish “Not what you think” as Bentley’s—or another cast member’s—exact words. Treat that phrase as headline framing, not a quotation.
What Luke Grimes said after reading the finale script
In a later interview published November 29, 2024, Grimes said he put off reading the last script. When he did, he recalled, “I was a mess.” He described the finale as “beautiful,” “profound” and “heartbreaking,” and said viewers would not feel they had wasted their time with the show. His comments are a reaction to the completed ending, rather than a pre-release tease. TVLine’s November 29, 2024 interview with Grimes reports his remarks.
