Lottie is dead at the bottom of a stairway at the end of Season 3, Episode 4, “12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis.” The episode shows her body but does not name her killer. Paramount+’s later Season 3 explainer identifies Callie as the person who pushed her down the stairs.
How the episode ends, step by step
The closing sequence is short, and it is easy to read more into it than it shows. The order of events matters because the episode deliberately separates the discovery of the body from any identification of who caused the death.
- Misty checks a post on the Citizen Detectives forum. The post contains a hidden image.
- Walter texts her to ask whether she is okay. That message tells her the post concerns Lottie.
- Misty opens the image, which shows Lottie lying dead at the bottom of a stairway.
- The scene cuts to police documenting the crime scene. No killer is shown or named before the episode ends.
The cliffhanger is the death itself, not a suspect. Viewers who expected a name at the close of Episode 4 will not find one, and the episode gives no on-screen clue that settles the question.
Episode 4 versus the later Season 3 answer
Two different things are often blended together in discussion of this ending: what the episode establishes, and what the season confirms afterward. The table separates them.

| Question | Episode 4 ending | Later Season 3 explainer (Paramount+) |
|---|---|---|
| Who is dead? | Lottie | Lottie |
| Where was she found? | At the bottom of a stairway | At the bottom of the stairs |
| Who caused the death? | Not named or shown | Callie pushed her |
| What triggered the confrontation? | Not stated in the ending scene | Lottie had taken a tape, and Callie learned of it |
| What did Lottie accuse Callie of? | Not stated in the ending scene | Lottie insisted Callie carried the same wilderness darkness Shauna had |
The explainer is the source for the Callie answer. It is a retrospective explanation published after the episode aired, which is why the episode itself and the explainer should be read as two separate layers.
Why the Callie reveal makes sense in the season
The later explanation depends on a chain of relationships that the episode builds up before the body appears. Reading those links in order shows why the push is presented as the outcome of tension that had been building inside Shauna’s household.

- Lottie grows close to Callie. In the present-day plot, Lottie is living in Shauna’s home and forms a bond with Shauna’s daughter.
- A gift alarms Shauna. Lottie gives Callie Jackie’s heart necklace. Shauna reacts with alarm, and the moment contributes to the rupture between Shauna and Lottie.
- Shauna’s fear is about the family. Melanie Lynskey, who plays adult Shauna, described Shauna’s fear that Lottie would disrupt her relationship with Callie.
- The tape and the accusation. According to the explainer, Callie learned that Lottie had taken a tape. Lottie then insisted that Callie had the same wilderness evils Shauna had. Callie pushed Lottie after that confrontation.
Because the explainer, not the episode, supplies the tape and the accusation, a reader should treat those details as confirmed Season 3 story information rather than something Episode 4 itself shows.
The Coach Ben trial as a thematic parallel
Running alongside the present-day story is a wilderness plot in which the group holds a trial for Coach Ben over the cabin fire. Ben denies setting it. The girls’ vote becomes pressured, and Shauna’s influence helps produce a guilty verdict.

The parallel is a reading of the episode, not a proven link between the two storylines. Both plots dramatize suspicion, group pressure, and the way uncertain evidence becomes a judgment. Nothing in the reviewed coverage establishes that the trial causally connects to Lottie’s death.
What the cast said at the time
Interviews published on February 28, 2025, came out before the later explainer, so the cast comments reflect how the mystery stood at that point.

Simone Kessell on Lottie’s apology
Simone Kessell, who plays adult Lottie, told TV Insider that Lottie is “rehearsing an apology for the people who believed in her, the people she feels she’s let down, the people she feels she’s lied to.” Kessell describes Lottie as guilty and trying to cope with what she has done. TheWrap also quoted Kessell describing Lottie as “inserting herself into the family dynamic that was already crumbling.”
Melanie Lynskey on the suspect field
Melanie Lynskey told TV Insider, “The finger gets pointed at everybody. I think that’s the fun thing about this season, really. There’s a lot of different suspects.” That remark described the open mystery as it stood in February 2025. It was not a later confirmation of who the killer is.
