Yeat’s ‘2093’ Review: A Dystopian Soundscape With Limits

Yeat’s 2093 builds a glossy dystopian sound world across shifting rage, techno, and house textures, but its conceptual ambition is not always matched by substance.

Yeat’s 2093 is a 22-track, 70-minute plunge into a sleek, late-century dystopia, built from more than the blown-out rage beats associated with his earlier sound. Its excursions into techno and house give the album a distinctive atmosphere, but the concept and production do not always translate into lyrical or thematic depth. That tension is central to the record: it is often more compelling as a world of sound than as a fully realized story.

What is Yeat’s 2093 about?

2093 presents a future-facing, dystopian atmosphere rather than a clearly narrated plot. Apple Music’s editorial description calls it “loosely organized around the late-21st-century dystopia in which Yeat apparently already lives.” That is the platform’s framing, not a definitive artist-authored explanation of the album.

The concept works most clearly as a mood: the music suggests a polished, disorienting future through synthetic textures, abrupt shifts, and digitally altered vocals. The album’s title and sound invite listeners into that setting, but the available sources do not establish a track-by-track storyline or a single, explicit narrative to decode.

How does the album sound?

Apple Music describes 2093 as moving beyond rage rap into techno and house rhythms. That range is the album’s strongest distinguishing feature. Rather than relying on one continuous barrage, the production shifts between forceful rap foundations and more club-oriented or atmospheric passages, giving the project a futuristic sheen.

Pitchfork reviewer Alphonse Pierre also noted the glitzy soundscapes, rapidly changing tempos, and cyborg-like vocal effects. Those elements help create a consistent sense of artificiality, even when individual tracks move in different directions. The result is adventurous in texture, though its long runtime can make the atmosphere feel more sustained than developed.

Does the concept add substance?

That depends on what a listener wants from the premise. If the goal is a cohesive sonic environment, the dystopian framing gives the production a useful center. If the goal is a concept album whose ideas deepen through lyrics and narrative, the experience is less persuasive. Pierre’s February 27, 2024 review for Pitchfork awarded the album 5.8 and argued that its glitzy style does not consistently amount to substance.

That is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus verdict. It captures a real tension in the record: the sound often signals a vivid world, while the project does not always make that world feel equally developed in its writing. Listeners drawn to atmosphere and production changes may find more to return to than those looking for a tightly plotted or consistently revealing concept.

How many songs are on 2093?

The answer depends on the edition. The original release and the next-day P2 version have different track counts, while the later collector vinyl bundles additional material. Treating these as one universal count obscures what each release contains.

Edition Track count What the listing establishes
Original 2093 (February 16, 2024) 22 Universal Music Canada announced the 22-track album. Apple Music also lists 22 songs and a 1 hour 10 minute runtime for the 2024 album.
2093 P2 (February 17, 2024) 24 Universal Music Canada described P2 as adding “As We Speak” featuring Drake and “Never quit.”
Collector’s Edition 3LP 28 The official Yeat store listing describes the complete album with bonus tracks from P1, P2, and P3 editions.

The original album’s 22-track announcement lists Lil Wayne on “Lyfestylë” and Future on “Stand On It.” The P2 announcement adds Drake on “As We Speak.” The larger vinyl count reflects the collector package’s combined bonus material, not a replacement count for the original digital album.

Is there a physical edition?

Yeat’s official store lists a limited Collector’s Edition 3LP with three glow-in-the-dark 180-gram discs. The product page says it is exclusive to YeatOfficial.com and currently shows it as sold out; availability can change.

Verdict

2093 is most successful as an ambitious, finely stylized sound world. Its shifts among rage, techno, and house textures make the dystopian premise audible, but the album’s writing and conceptual development do not always match that production ambition. It is a worthwhile listen for fans interested in Yeat’s more exploratory side, with the caveat that atmosphere does more of the work than a fully articulated story.
