To run XSplit Broadcaster as a YouTube 24/7 stream from a VPS, use XSplit’s YouTube output or a Custom RTMP output, then enter YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL and stream key. Set the encoder to match YouTube’s current settings for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; for H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60, with a two-second keyframe interval. A VPS adds its own constraints: supported Windows and graphics hardware, reliable sustained upload capacity, and a plan for restarts and recordings.
Before configuring XSplit: confirm the channel and VPS are eligible
First check that the YouTube channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If the channel is not eligible, changing XSplit settings will not resolve the problem. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Next confirm that the VPS is suitable for a persistent desktop streaming workload. XSplit’s published minimum requirements include 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics card supporting DirectX 10.1 or better. XSplit lists a second-generation Core i5 equivalent as a minimum processor and a second-generation Core i7 equivalent as recommended. Its published upload figures are 500 kbps minimum for its lowest streaming settings and 5 Mbps recommended for HD. These desktop requirements do not guarantee that XSplit will work on a particular VPS: verify the provider’s Windows support, available graphics and encoding capability, sustained upload, and rules for persistent workloads. The sources do not establish compatibility with a particular hypervisor or VPS provider. Check XSplit Broadcaster’s requirements against the exact VPS you plan to use.
Choose XSplit’s YouTube output or Custom RTMP
| Output | Credential setup | Protocol control | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube output | Use XSplit’s YouTube connection flow. | Confirm the output is using YouTube’s current RTMPS connection method and settings. | Use it if you want a dedicated YouTube workflow and do not need to enter server credentials manually. |
| Custom RTMP | Enter YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key manually. XSplit’s setup guide labels the credential field “Stream Name.” | Use the current RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube. | Use it when you want to enter the ingest URL and key directly or need a custom RTMP destination. |
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over an encrypted TLS/SSL connection. For the current URL, copy it from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an old saved value. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and XSplit’s Custom RTMP setup guide.

Set up the YouTube stream key in XSplit
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or open the stream you intend to use. Copy its current RTMPS stream URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. Treat it like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- In XSplit Broadcaster, select the YouTube output and complete its connection flow, or create a Custom RTMP output.
- For Custom RTMP, paste the RTMPS URL into the server or URL field and the stream key into “Stream Name.” Check for leading or trailing spaces before saving.
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval described below. Save the output configuration and run a test before scheduling continuous use.
XSplit’s exact menus can vary by version, so use its current setup guide if a label differs. Do not share a screenshot of the output configuration unless the stream key is hidden.
Choose bitrate, keyframes, and network headroom
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations as accessed in October 2026; AV1 and H.265 use different recommendations. YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Recheck the current encoder settings table before going live because its recommendations may change.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
- Rate control: CBR, as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; four seconds is the maximum in YouTube’s guidance.
- Codec and output size: select a combination supported by XSplit and use the matching YouTube recommendation rather than applying the H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265.
- Upload capacity: measure the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube advises allowing 20% headroom over the primary plus backup bitrate. A provider’s advertised port speed alone does not demonstrate reliable sustained throughput.
For a 24/7 stream, stability matters as much as a bitrate that works in a short test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a network disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s streaming network tips.
Test the VPS stream before scheduling continuous playback
- Set the test stream to private or unlisted, as appropriate for your channel and workflow.
- Use a representative portion of the documentary playlist, including typical motion and audio. A static or unusually low-motion test may not expose the same encoding or bandwidth issues.
- Start the output and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Confirm that the feed arrives at the expected resolution and frame rate and that the audio is present.
- Observe the stream long enough to detect unstable outbound bandwidth, dropped frames, or connection interruptions. Verify sustained VPS upload rather than relying on the provider’s headline port speed.
- Schedule the public stream only after the private test behaves as expected. Keep a separate recovery plan for the VPS, XSplit, and network interruptions; the reviewed official guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation or a specific reconnect guarantee.
Plan separately for archives and documentary rights
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that one continuous 24-hour-or-longer session will be archived in full. If viewers need an on-demand copy, arrange a local or separate recording and test the complete recording and retrieval workflow rather than depending on a single continuous live session to create the archive. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Before making a documentary available as a continuous stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the film, soundtrack, clips, stills, and any other included material. A license to watch or download a documentary does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it live. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help organize a rights review; it does not grant permission or replace legal advice.
Troubleshoot common XSplit Broadcaster RTMP problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect, stale, or mismatched RTMPS URL or stream key; channel is not eligible. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the key is in XSplit’s “Stream Name” field for Custom RTMP, and confirm the channel’s live eligibility. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The VPS cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or its outbound connection is disrupted. | Measure sustained upload, reduce the bitrate to the current YouTube recommendation for a lower supported output mode if needed, and test again with headroom. Do not treat advertised port speed as a guarantee. |
| Output works on a desktop but not on the VPS | The VPS may not provide a supported Windows environment, compatible graphics/encoding capability, or sufficient resources. | Compare the actual VPS configuration with XSplit’s published requirements and ask the provider about graphics support and persistent workloads. No specific VPS configuration is established as compatible. |
| The stream stops and does not resume as expected | A network interruption, process failure, or VPS restart has stopped the feed; a continuous reconnect guarantee is not established by the cited official guidance. | Check XSplit and VPS logs and the connection state, then restart the output and confirm reception in Live Control Room. Design and test a separate restart and recovery procedure for the chosen host. |
| The live session is missing or incomplete in archives | A single session of 12 hours or longer falls outside YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance for streams under 12 hours. | Use and test a separate recording workflow if an on-demand copy is important. |
