XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only streaming and recording software for building scenes from sources such as cameras, gameplay, video, images, and web content. Its free plan supports streaming up to 720p without a watermark; higher resolutions are watermarked unless you use Premium. If you need macOS or Linux support, OBS Studio is the clearest alternative. The right choice depends on your operating system and the features you need—not on an established performance advantage: there is no hands-on test or comparative benchmark behind this review.

What XSplit Broadcaster does

XSplit Broadcaster is a desktop production tool: you assemble a scene from visual and audio sources, then send that scene to a streaming platform or record it locally. A scene can include a webcam or camera feed, gameplay, video, images, GIFs, and web content. XSplit also highlights camera and background effects, multiple audio tracks for recording, plugins and extensions, and the ability to import OBS scenes. See XSplit Broadcaster’s features.

This is a scene-based production workflow, not a service that keeps a prerecorded YouTube channel live from the cloud. You use XSplit on a computer to produce a stream or recording.

Check compatibility before setting it up

XSplit’s current support page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit, and says there is no Mac version planned. Its published minimum requirements are 8 GB RAM, a GeForce- or Radeon-class GPU supporting DirectX 10.1 or better, 250 MB of storage, and broadband internet. The page lists 500 kbps upload as the minimum for streaming at the lowest settings. CPU recommendations differ for 720p and 1080p streaming or recording; check the current requirements for the specific workload you plan to run. These are vendor-published baseline requirements, not a guarantee that a particular game, scene, encoder, or quality setting will perform well. Check XSplit Broadcaster’s system requirements.

Does XSplit Broadcaster work on Mac OS? No: the current support information says Broadcaster is Windows-only. If you use macOS or Linux, consider OBS Studio instead.

Features that matter in day-to-day use

Scenes and sources

A scene is the layout you send to viewers or capture in a recording. You add sources, arrange them on the canvas, and select a scene for your output. That makes it possible to combine, for example, a game capture, webcam, title graphic, and browser content in one composition. XSplit’s product page also describes GIFs, video, images, and webpages as supported media sources.

Audio, effects, and extensions

XSplit lists multiple audio tracks for recording, camera and background effects, and a plugin and extension ecosystem. It also supports importing OBS scenes. Confirm that a particular plugin or feature is available on your plan before relying on it; XSplit’s plan comparison marks some production features as Premium-only.

Plan-dependent features

The current comparison identifies limits or plan gates for scene count, output resolution, watermarking, virtual camera, audio and source transitions, projector, preview, multistreaming, and commercial use. The practical question is whether you need a capability that the Free plan restricts, rather than whether a longer feature list sounds useful. Review XSplit’s current Free and Premium comparison.

How to start a stream or recording

XSplit’s documented workflow begins with a scene, then configures an output. The exact controls can change with software updates and the streaming destination, so follow the current in-app prompts if a label differs.

  1. Install and sign in. First verify that your computer meets the published requirements, then install Broadcaster and sign in.
  2. Create your first scene. Use the Layout Wizard for a guided starting layout, or add sources manually and arrange them on the canvas. Include only the sources you intend to use; a camera is optional.
  3. Configure a streaming output. Select a supported platform and follow XSplit’s output setup to authenticate it. For a destination that accepts RTMP, XSplit documents a custom RTMP output option; use the destination’s current server URL and stream key rather than guessing them.
  4. Check the scene and audio. Confirm the correct scene is selected and that the intended audio sources are active. Review the platform’s stream settings as well as XSplit’s output configuration.
  5. Go live or record. Select the configured output and click Stream to start a broadcast. To record, confirm which canvas you want captured and click Record. XSplit’s walkthrough is at Getting Started with XSplit Broadcaster.

Before a public broadcast, make a short test stream or local recording and check the picture, audio, and framing. The output depends on your settings, sources, computer, network, and destination; the vendor setup guide is a workflow, not a performance guarantee.

XSplit Broadcaster vs. OBS Studio

OBS Studio is the most directly documented alternative here. OBS is free and open source, and its official project lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Both programs use scenes and sources; the evidence does not establish that one is universally easier, faster, or more reliable. Compare the actual requirements that matter to your setup.

Decision point XSplit Broadcaster OBS Studio
Operating systems Windows 10/11 64-bit; no Mac version planned, according to XSplit Support. Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to the OBS Project.
Cost and licensing Free tier and paid Premium plans with feature limits; pricing page lists US prices. Free and open source; OBS Help says there is no watermark or commercial-use restriction.
Getting started Offers a Layout Wizard to create a starting scene. Offers an Auto-Configuration Wizard and a quick-start workflow.
Production and extensibility Scenes and sources, plugins/extensions, and OBS scene import; some features are plan-dependent. Scenes, sources, transitions, audio mixer, plugins, scripts, and API extensibility are described by OBS.

For OBS’s official overview, see OBS Studio, its Help Portal, and the Quick Start Guide.

Choose XSplit if…

  • You are on Windows and want to use XSplit’s Layout Wizard and its scene-based production workflow.
  • The Free plan’s 720p unwatermarked ceiling and other limits are sufficient, or you have checked that a Premium feature you need is included.
  • You specifically want an XSplit feature such as its plugin workflow or OBS scene import.

Choose OBS if…

  • You need macOS or Linux support.
  • You prefer free, open-source software without a watermark or commercial-use restriction according to OBS Help.
  • You want to assess OBS’s own scene, audio, transition, plugin, script, or API options against your production needs.

Cost and equipment considerations

XSplit does not require a particular webcam: a camera feed is one optional source among several. If you want to appear on camera, a USB webcam is one possible input, but the software requirements do not specify a preferred model. Your total setup cost may also depend on your computer, internet service, camera, microphone, or capture hardware; those needs vary with your content and are not included in XSplit’s plan price.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is specifically to keep prerecorded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is different from producing scenes with desktop software. StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and YouTube streams: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
