XOXX Composer was a tangible, MIDI-compatible sample sequencer designed by Axel Bluhme. Its unusual interface used magnetic ball bearings placed on eight rotating discs. Each disc represented a sound lane with 16 quantized positions, turning a digital beat pattern into a physical object that could be seen, touched, rearranged, and played.
XOXX was documented primarily as a 2015–2016 design project and prototype-era instrument. The available evidence does not confirm a regular retail launch, current availability, or ongoing official support.
What XOXX Composer was
XOXX was not simply an acoustic music box and should not be described as a conventional synthesizer. It was closer to a mechanical interface for digital sampling, looping, and sequencing. The project connected a physical arrangement of objects with electronically triggered samples and MIDI-based music systems.
Bluhme presented the project on Behance on March 31, 2015. Follow-up coverage in 2016 described a more developed black version, a desktop application, demonstrations, and an exhibition connected with the Royal College of Art graduate show in London. The project was also associated with a Bill Moggridge Award for design. Recognition, however, did not establish that XOXX entered mass production.

The phrase “music box for the digital era” is useful because XOXX made musical repetition visible. But unlike a traditional music box, it did not produce sound through a pinned cylinder and mechanical comb. Its physical mechanism controlled digitally stored or electronically triggered samples.
How the magnetic sequencer worked
The documented signal path can be summarized as:
magnetic ball placement → rotating 16-step disc → sensor detection → sample trigger → audio or MIDI output
- Eight rotating discs: Each disc represented one sample or sound lane.
- Sixteen positions per disc: The positions formed a quantized rhythmic sequence.
- Magnetic balls: The user placed small magnetic ball bearings into selected positions.
- Rotation and sensing: As a disc rotated, a sensor detected the balls as they passed the sensing point.
- Sample triggering: The detected positions determined when the associated sample played.
- Track controls: Controls below the discs were described as adjusting properties such as pitch and volume.
This arrangement gave the user immediate visual feedback. A ball was not an abstract event hidden in a piano-roll editor: it was a physical object occupying a visible place in a repeating pattern. Adding, removing, or moving one changed the sequence directly.

Project documentation described up to eight samples being used dynamically at once, with each disc functioning as a separate lane. The intended workflow included sampling, looping, sequencing, and MIDI export. XOXX was also described as MIDI-compatible, meaning it could communicate with other electronic instruments, computers, and music software.
That does not make XOXX a complete workstation. MIDI compatibility does not by itself prove that the unit contained a full synthesizer, recorder, mixer, or standalone production environment. The documentation instead presents a physical sequencing interface connected to a desktop app and wider digital music systems.

Why the music-box analogy worked
A conventional music box encodes musical events in a visible mechanical structure. XOXX applied a similar idea to digital rhythm: rotation supplied repetition, the positions supplied timing, and the physical objects supplied the pattern.

This matters because much of modern music software hides the relationship between action and result behind menus, grids, and files. XOXX’s design ambition was to expose processes such as sampling, looping, and sequencing through direct physical interaction. It could function as a sketchbook for quickly trying variations rather than as a replacement for a full digital audio workstation.

That makes the concept especially relevant to music education and interaction design. A learner could see how a repeating grid works, how a small positional change affects a rhythm, and how separate sound lanes combine into a loop. Claims that the system would make music accessible to “anyone,” however, should be treated as design ambition rather than verified usability research.

Bluhme’s Behance presentation established the project publicly in 2015. By 2016, coverage described a sleeker black redesign, a connection to a desktop application, and demonstrations using both sampled instruments and everyday sounds.
The later version was shown in connection with the Royal College of Art graduate exhibition in London, which ran through July 3, 2016. Contemporary coverage also discussed the project’s design recognition. These developments show that XOXX progressed beyond a purely early sketch, but they do not prove a commercial product launch or a stable production run.

Was XOXX ever sold?
Current retail availability and official support could not be verified. The 2016 reporting described XOXX as a project that was hopefully going to become available, while another report noted that no pricing or availability details had been posted. The sources discuss exhibitions, demonstrations, and software connectivity—not confirmed retail distribution.
The safest description is that XOXX is best documented as a design project or prototype-era instrument. It should not be called definitively discontinued without a direct statement from Bluhme or an authoritative company record. Likewise, there is no established basis for claiming a retail price, crowdfunding campaign, public app download, used-market availability, or continuing software support.
What XOXX got right—and what it could not replace
- Immediate visual feedback: The pattern was visible without opening a software editor.
- Physical experimentation: Moving a ball offered a simple way to try rhythmic variations.
- Educational value: The interface made steps, loops, quantization, and sample lanes concrete.
- Distinctive performance object: Rotating discs and magnetic pieces gave the instrument an installation-like presence.
- A bridge to digital systems: MIDI and the desktop software connected the physical pattern to broader music setups.
The same design also implied constraints. Eight lanes and 16 steps form a focused canvas, not a full arrangement environment. Magnetic pieces could be misplaced, and a mechanical pattern editor would likely be less flexible than a DAW for long compositions and detailed editing. These are practical implications of the documented design, not measured performance results.
The available material does not establish whether users could change step length, swing, tempo, direction, or pattern length; how samples were stored; which operating systems the app supported; whether audio playback happened onboard or through a computer; or how the system handled a ball shifting during rotation.

Modern alternatives
No current product listed here reproduces XOXX’s exact magnetic-disc interaction. These are functional alternatives, not replicas:
| Product | Best for | How it differs from XOXX |
|---|---|---|
| Novation Launchpad Mini | Affordable visual pad-grid control | Uses RGB pads rather than rotating discs and is designed for contemporary software workflows. Novation’s official page listed it at $129.99 on August 18, 2026. |
| Novation Launchpad X | Ableton Live and larger grid-based control | Offers a 64-pad MIDI grid, but is less sculptural and not a standalone sample instrument. The listed price was $229.99. |
| Novation Launchpad Pro | Advanced grid sequencing | Provides a modern standalone four-track, 32-step sequencing workflow without XOXX’s physical metaphor. The listed price was $399.99. |
| Arturia BeatStep | Compact MIDI sequencing | Uses knobs and conventional step-sequencer controls rather than magnetic objects. Arturia listed it at $149. |
| Arturia KeyStep | Keyboard input and external hardware | Combines a compact keyboard with sequencing and MIDI connectivity, making it more suitable for melodic input than XOXX’s sample-first interface. The listed price was $169. |
| Teenage Engineering OP–1 field | Premium portable all-in-one production | Combines sampling, synthesis, drums, sequencing, and recording, but is far broader and more expensive than XOXX. Teenage Engineering’s U.S. store listed it at $1,999. |
Bottom line
XOXX Composer’s importance is primarily conceptual and interaction-oriented. It showed how a digital sampler and sequencer could be made tangible through rotating discs, magnetic pieces, and visible repetition. The idea remains compelling for musicians, educators, and designers interested in physical interfaces—but XOXX should be presented as a notable prototype-era design project, not as a currently supported mainstream instrument.
