This is a review of season 1, not a verdict on the full series. Marvel Animation’s 10-episode season debuted on Disney+ on March 20, 2024, revisiting the 1990s animated X-Men and its ensemble. The official Disney media kit lists Beau DeMayo as head writer and the Newton Brothers as composers. Its principal voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, and Matthew Waterson as Magneto.

Can new viewers start with X-Men ’97?
Yes, with one qualification: the series is approachable, but it is not a clean-slate reboot. Its central team and superhero conflicts are legible without a detailed command of earlier episodes, while the continuation premise and callbacks give returning viewers extra context. The practical divide is between following the characters and recognizing the history behind them; the first does not require the second.
That makes season 1 a reasonable entry point for someone curious about the animated series, especially if they are comfortable joining a story already in progress. Viewers who want every relationship and reference explained from the ground up may find the inherited continuity a hurdle rather than a welcome shortcut.

How much does nostalgia dominate?
The revival’s 1990s inheritance is both its invitation and its burden. Familiar characters, returning voices, and visual echoes create instant recognition, but they can also make the show feel crowded with reminders of what came before. The Guardian’s Jesse Hassenger describes the opening episodes as initially close to the old Saturday-morning-cartoon style, then argues that the series becomes more stylized as it develops. His review points to bolder colors, evocative close-ups, soap-opera relationships, and episodic cliffhangers as elements that give the revival a voice beyond imitation. So the nostalgia complaint is most persuasive when aimed at the show’s density of inherited material, not at the idea that it has nothing new to offer. Its visual approach and heightened serial drama provide reasons to keep watching beyond the pleasure of recognition.

Do crossovers take over the story?
Not according to Hassenger’s assessment: references to other 1990s animated series are generally kept at Easter-egg scale. That distinction matters. A familiar image or character can reward fans without requiring newcomers to stop and learn another show’s history. The bigger continuity commitment is the X-Men legacy itself, rather than a parade of crossovers that displaces the central team.
What to expect from the series now
X-Men ’97 is no longer a one-season revival. Disney announced season 2 for July 1, 2026, and its UK press release reports that it began streaming exclusively on Disney+ that day; season 2 has nine episodes. Disney+ lists two seasons spanning 2024–2026. These later episodes do not change the scope of this review, and the available material does not establish whether season 2 repeats or resolves season 1’s tension between accessibility and nostalgia.

Where to watch and what to know first
Disney identifies Disney+ as the exclusive streaming home. Check the service in your territory, because Disney+ says availability can vary by region. Its listing rates the show TV-14 and warns that some flashing-light sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers. Check the Disney+ listing.
