The X-Men and Magneto slow Asteroid M, but the asteroid and several X-Men vanish before the rescue is complete. Six months later the team’s missing members are revealed to be in two very different periods: ancient Egypt, where Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Magneto and Professor X meet the future Apocalypse, and a far-future era, where Cyclops and Jean Grey meet Mother Askani and a young Nathan Summers. The mid-credits scene then pulls Apocalypse and Gambit into the story. The season ends with a time-displacement mystery, not a missing-person case.
How the finale ends, step by step
- The asteroid fight. The three-part “Tolerance Is Extinction” arc ends with the X-Men and Magneto trying to stop Asteroid M from hitting Earth. Professor X reaches Magneto, who slows the asteroid. Before the rescue resolves, the asteroid and several X-Men disappear.
- The six-month jump. The episode skips ahead six months. Forge has been unable to find the missing team. Bishop arrives and changes the search: instead of asking where the team went, he asks when they went.
- Two destinations. The finale discloses two locations, one in the distant past and one in the distant future (detailed below).
- The mid-credits scene. The show returns to the ruins of Genosha, where a hand retrieves a torn playing card linked with Gambit and an older-looking Apocalypse speaks.
The ending therefore turns a cliffhanger about a rescue into a question about travel through time. That is the core fact for understanding everything that follows.

Where the missing X-Men went
The finale shows two groups in two eras. It does not show where every missing member is.
| Location | Who the finale shows | What the scene reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Egypt | Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Magneto and Professor X | The man they help identifies himself as En Sabah Nur, the future Apocalypse |
| Far future | Cyclops and Jean Grey | They meet Mother Askani and a young Nathan Summers |
| Other missing members | Not shown | The finale does not say where they are |
The ancient Egypt reveal and En Sabah Nur
The Egyptian scene is the finale’s identity reveal. The man the group helps introduces himself as En Sabah Nur, the name Apocalypse goes by before he becomes the figure the show has been building toward. That reveal links the ancient timeline directly to Apocalypse, and it is the point at which the audience learns why the villain’s history matters to this season.

The far-future scene and the Summers family
Cyclops and Jean Grey arrive in a far-future era, where they meet Mother Askani and a young Nathan Summers. This scene introduces Nathan, Cyclops and Jean’s son, into the story’s future timeline. Because the finale does not explain how the two groups will reconnect, the far-future scene works as a setup for the family’s role in later episodes rather than a resolution.
The mid-credits scene: Apocalypse and Gambit
The mid-credits scene returns to Genosha, the nation whose destruction was a major tragedy in the series. It establishes two things: Apocalypse is present in the story, and he has a connection to the Genosha tragedy. The torn playing card linked with Gambit suggests Apocalypse has taken an interest in Gambit. TheWrap quoted the line spoken in the scene: “So much pain, my children. So much death.” This is dialogue from the character Apocalypse.

The scene is a tease, not a confirmed plot point. The table below separates what the finale shows from what commentators inferred.
| Point | Status |
|---|---|
| Asteroid M slowed, then the asteroid and several X-Men disappear | Shown in the finale |
| Ancient Egypt, and the man who identifies himself as En Sabah Nur | Shown in the finale |
| Far future, Mother Askani and young Nathan Summers | Shown in the finale |
| Apocalypse present in Genosha, with the torn Gambit card | Shown in the mid-credits scene |
| Gambit becoming Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death | Interpretation by ComicBook.com’s May 15, 2024 analysis; the scene does not confirm it |
| A future Apocalypse and Gambit storyline | Considered likely by that same analysis; not confirmed by the show |
The Horseman prediction is only as strong as the reasoning behind it. The card and Apocalypse’s interest in Gambit are real clues, but the role itself was a forecast written before Season 2 aired.

What Disney has confirmed about Season 2
Disney’s official press materials are the most reliable guide to the season’s structure. Disney’s Season 1 press kit describes the series as a 10-episode continuation of the 1990s X-Men animated era and says it began streaming on Disney+ on March 20, 2024.
Disney’s Season 2 announcement, dated June 3, 2026, sets out the broad premise: the X-Men are divided across different eras and struggling to find their way home. In the 1990s, suspicious enemies and new strains of mutant intolerance rise during the team’s absence. The announcement says Season 2 has nine episodes and gave July 1, 2026 as the return date. As of October 8, 2026, that date has already passed.

- The 683 x 480 mm armed image features the brave protagonists of the '97 X-Men series
- The delivery includes a poster to make it easier to assemble the puzzle
- It is a unique puzzle series featuring favorite characters from children's stories, movies and series
- The product is FSC certified and manufactured using high quality materials. We have dispensed with plastic in the packaging: it is sealed only with two stickers.
- Excellent memory exercise, manual skill development, concentration practice, patience and perception. A perfect gift for puzzle fans, adults and children aged 12 and up
The announcement does not name a comic storyline. The payoff it describes is the one the finale sets up: separated eras, a return-home problem, and hostility in the 1990s that grows while the team is away.

ComicBook.com’s May 15, 2024 analysis linked each finale location to a comic story. Those links are useful if you know the comics, but they are comparisons, not promises about Season 2.
Best Value
| Finale scene | Comic compared by ComicBook.com | Original year |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Egypt and En Sabah Nur | The Rise of Apocalypse | 1996 |
| Far future, Cyclops and Nathan Summers | The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix | 1994 |
| Genosha tease with Apocalypse and Gambit | Blood of Apocalypse | 2006 |
The analysis also made forecasts about which storylines Season 2 would adapt. Those forecasts were written before the season aired and should be treated as speculation. Readers who want to know what Season 2 actually shows should rely on the episodes themselves.
What the ending means for viewers
The finale leaves three questions open: how the separated X-Men will return, what happens to the members the finale does not show, and whether Apocalypse’s interest in Gambit becomes a plot in Season 2. Season 2 is set to address the first of these directly, through the separated-eras premise Disney announced.
Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+, the service Disney names in its series materials.
