WWE history holds mysteries with very different endings: a lost match recording was found, the backstage story behind a famous incident remains contested, and the circumstances around Owen Hart’s death must be discussed with care. The documented cases below are not a verified “top 15,” and “craziest” is a matter of editorial judgment—not a measured ranking.
Which WWE mysteries are documented, and what is their status?
| Case | Status | What makes it notable |
|---|---|---|
| The Curtain Call | Disputed recollections | Four wrestlers broke character together at Madison Square Garden in 1996; accounts differ over planning and approval. |
| Owen Hart’s death and its aftermath | Competing claims; not settled by the lawsuit’s resolution | A corporate settlement record and a later statement from Martha Hart offer distinct, attributed perspectives. |
| Max Moon | Partly explained | Konnan described why he stopped performing the character, but his account is not a complete production history. |
| Bret Hart vs. Tom Magee | Solved lost-media mystery | The recording of an untelevised 1986 match was eventually found in Hart’s tape library. |
The order below reflects historical interest and the degree of uncertainty, not an objective score. WWE’s materials and the cited parties’ accounts do not establish a reliable popularity ranking or a count of how many WWE mysteries remain unsolved.
1. The Curtain Call: what was planned, and what did Vince McMahon approve?
What happened at Madison Square Garden
On May 19, 1996, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Triple H stood together in the ring after a match at Madison Square Garden. The moment became known as the “Curtain Call” or “MSG Incident.” Because the wrestlers were associated with competing on-screen factions, the public display of camaraderie blurred the line between WWE’s fictional rivalries and the people portraying them.
Why the backstage story is still disputed
WWE’s oral history preserves differing recollections. Michaels said the idea had been discussed beforehand and recalled Triple H asking whether they were going through with it. Nash said he spoke with Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson and was told it was acceptable. Michaels also recalled the reaction changing after McMahon received phone calls. These are participants’ later accounts, not a single uncontested record of what was approved in advance.

Netflix Tudum’s recap of Mr. McMahon presents the incident as an improvised breach of kayfabe, says Triple H was penalized, and connects that penalty to Steve Austin receiving a planned King of the Ring win. That is the documentary recap’s account of the backstage consequences; it should not be mistaken for contemporaneous documentation that independently settles every detail.
2. Owen Hart: what does the public record establish?
The settlement and the disputed accounts
Owen Hart’s death was a real tragedy, not a wrestling-world puzzle to treat as entertainment. WWE Entertainment, Inc.’s November 2, 2000 statement announced that the Hart family lawsuit had been settled, that WWE would receive a full release from further liability in the case, and that the company would record a $7 million charge net of insurance recoveries.

A settlement announcement establishes the terms WWE publicly reported; it does not, by itself, prove or disprove every disputed factual claim about the incident. In a statement distributed by PR Newswire on October 3, 2024, Martha Hart disputed the Netflix documentary’s framing and alleged that negligence caused Owen’s death. Those allegations should be attributed to her. The cited statements do not independently settle all technical questions about the equipment or resolve the parties’ competing accounts.
3. Max Moon: why did the character disappear?
Konnan’s account of the costume and the handoff
In a 2013 WWE interview, Konnan said he originated the concept, which was then called The Comet Kid. He described the costume’s boxes as burdensome to carry, said his work in Mexico was thriving, and recalled later hearing that Paul Diamond—whose real name is Tom Boric—had taken over the gimmick. WWE’s introduction to the interview says the character disappeared shortly afterward.

This gives a plausible explanation for Konnan’s departure from the role, not a complete account of every production decision or the character’s brief run. The evidence here is Konnan’s retrospective explanation, rather than an internal WWE record documenting the full history of Max Moon.
4. Bret Hart vs. Tom Magee: how was the “lost match” found?
A missing recording turns up in Hart’s library
Bret Hart and Tom Magee wrestled an untelevised tryout match in Rochester, New York, in 1986. The recording became difficult to locate, earning WWE’s label “lost match,” until it was discovered in Hart’s tape library. WWE announced a documentary about the search in 2019.

This is a mystery with a resolution: the footage was found. It belongs in a history of WWE’s curious unanswered questions because the search captured fans’ attention, but calling it unsolved today would be inaccurate.

- Separate the event from its explanation. The Curtain Call happened; what was agreed beforehand is described differently by participants.
- Identify who is speaking. A company statement, an oral history, a documentary recap and a party’s later statement are different kinds of evidence.
- Check the date and current status. The Hart–Magee recording was once missing but was later found.
- Do not treat a legal settlement as a complete factual verdict. It documents a resolution of a lawsuit, not proof of every competing claim.
- Use care with real harm. Owen Hart’s death and allegations about its cause deserve accurate attribution and respectful language.
These cases show why “unsolved” needs a date and a definition. Some WWE stories remain disputed, some are partly explained by later recollections, and some were resolved when missing evidence resurfaced.
