These 15 films offer a varied Paris watchlist, from French New Wave and classic musicals to romance, animation and action. It is a curated selection, not an objective ranking. Some films tell stories set in Paris; others are notable for particular Paris locations, while a few are associated with the wider Paris Region rather than the city proper. Those connections are identified below.
15 movies set in Paris, from classics to recent films
1. An American in Paris (1951)
This post-war musical imagines Paris through an American painter, George Gershwin’s music and an expansive ballet finale. It offers a luminous, stylized city rather than a documentary portrait of everyday life. VisitParisRegion includes it among films associated with the region.
2. Les 400 Coups (The 400 Blows, 1959)
François Truffaut’s French New Wave coming-of-age film follows Antoine Doinel through a child’s view of Paris. L’Officiel des spectacles describes it as filmed in real settings, making it a strong pick for viewers drawn to lived-in city streets rather than postcard imagery. L’Officiel des spectacles’ Paris film selection includes it.
3. Zazie dans le métro (1960)
Louis Malle’s comic, fast-moving Paris adventure turns the city into a playground. Locations identified by L’Officiel des spectacles include Pigalle, Bir-Hakeim, Gare de l’Est and the Eiffel Tower.

4. Moonraker (1979)
This James Bond adventure makes use of the Centre Pompidou: Paris’s visitor office identifies the building as the setting for a meeting between Bond and Dr. Holly Goodhead. Choose it for a location-driven action outing rather than a close study of Paris life. Paris je t’aime’s film-location list points to the connection.
5. Les Rendez-vous de Paris (1995)
Éric Rohmer’s three-part film evokes everyday encounters around the city. Its Paris locations include the Luxembourg Garden and the Picasso Museum, a good match for viewers who prefer conversation and observation to a plot built around landmarks.
6. Amélie (2001)
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s whimsical story is closely tied to Montmartre. The City of Paris associates it with Café des Deux Moulins, Sacré-Cœur, Canal Saint-Martin and Studio 28—though those sites are spread across the city, not all within Montmartre. The City of Paris guide to Amélie’s locations gives the film’s real-world connections.
Rank #2
7. Before Sunset (2004)
Jesse and Céline reunite and spend the film walking and talking through Paris. The route includes Shakespeare and Company and a bateau-mouche, with the city serving as the intimate setting for a conversation-driven romance.

In this mystery thriller, the Louvre is central to the Paris portion of the story. The visitor office notes scenes in front of the Louvre Pyramid, making the film a natural pick for viewers who want landmark-focused suspense.
9. Marie Antoinette (2006)
Sofia Coppola’s stylized period drama is centered on Versailles, not central Paris. Versailles is in the wider Paris Region, so this is a regional choice for a Paris-themed watchlist rather than a strictly Paris-set film.
Rank #3
10. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Paris becomes a fashion-world destination in this comedy-drama. VisitParisRegion points to the Golden Triangle around Avenue Montaigne, Avenue George V and the Champs-Élysées as part of the film’s Paris connection.
11. La Vie en rose (2007)
This biographical drama about singer Édith Piaf is tied to Paris and its surrounds; identified locations include Le Bourget airport. It suits viewers looking for a music-centered portrait rather than a sightseeing itinerary.

Pixar’s culinary fantasy places a rat with a gift for cooking in a Paris restaurant world. Its Paris is animated, not a live-action location tour, but the film offers a family-friendly way into the city’s food-and-restaurant mythology.
Rank #4
13. Rush Hour 3 (2007)
This buddy action comedy brings its leads to Paris, including an arrival sequence at Charles de Gaulle Airport. It is a brisk, location-led pick for viewers who want action more than a detailed portrait of the city.
14. Intouchables (2011)
This French comedy-drama is associated with Bondy, in Greater Paris. That regional connection is worth noting: Bondy is not downtown Paris, even though the film belongs on a wider Paris-area watchlist.
15. Mood Indigo (2013)
Michel Gondry adapts Boris Vian’s novel into an imaginative world with Paris-area locations that include the French Communist Party headquarters and Saint-Ouen ice rink. Its visual invention makes it a good choice for viewers who want a stranger, less literal screen version of the region.

Choose by the kind of Paris you want to see
- For classic, stylized Paris: An American in Paris turns the city into a musical fantasy; Ratatouille does so through animation and food.
- For a street-level or everyday impression: Try The 400 Blows or Rohmer’s Les Rendez-vous de Paris.
- For one neighborhood’s screen identity: Amélie is the clearest Montmartre-centered choice.
- For romance and conversation: Before Sunset makes its walking route part of the story.
- For landmarks and action: Moonraker, The Da Vinci Code and Rush Hour 3 connect Paris locations to adventure and suspense.
- For the wider region: Marie Antoinette takes you to Versailles, while Intouchables is associated with Bondy.
Paris-set stories and Paris-shot films are not the same
A film can be set in Paris, use Paris locations for particular scenes, or be associated with a place in the wider Paris Region. Those are overlapping but distinct connections; a Paris location does not mean every scene was filmed there, and a regional setting is not the same as central Paris. The selection above labels the connection where it matters rather than treating all three as interchangeable.
Paris remains a busy film-production city. Paris je t’aime, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, says, “Every year, Paris plays host to some 900 film shoots!” Its figures for 2023 report 98 films shot in Paris, 68 series filmed there and more than 7,400 filming days; those numbers describe 2023 and should not be read as current annual totals. The visitor office’s film page also lists cinema-themed walks.
Turn a movie night into a Paris location walk
Paris je t’aime publishes film-themed walks covering Notre-Dame and Île de la Cité, the Louvre-to-Opéra area, the Champs-Élysées and Eiffel Tower, the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain, and Montmartre. For an Amélie-inspired outing, the City of Paris guide links Café des Deux Moulins, Montmartre streets and Sacré-Cœur, then Canal Saint-Martin; it also identifies Studio 28 as the cinema-scene location. Check the official pages for current routes and access details before planning a visit.
