The matches range from a win in a wrestler’s hometown to one in their native country or a nearby city. Those distinctions matter: a show happening in a city does not, by itself, make that city a wrestler’s hometown.
Confirmed hometown and home-region title wins
WWE’s retrospective and event coverage establish the following seven cases. “Hometown” is used broadly here: each entry notes whether WWE identifies the connection as a hometown, homecoming, native place or nearby home region.
-
Shawn Michaels — WWE Championship, San Antonio
At Royal Rumble on January 19, 1997, Michaels defeated Sycho Sid in San Antonio to regain the WWE Championship. WWE describes the match as a hometown rematch; Michaels hit Sweet Chin Music to secure the pin. WWE’s retrospective recounts the win.
-
John Cena — World Heavyweight Championship, Boston
At Survivor Series on November 23, 2008, Cena defeated Chris Jericho in Boston to win his first World Heavyweight Championship. WWE presents the victory as a homecoming after Cena recovered from a neck injury. WWE’s retrospective describes the moment.

The British Bulldog — Intercontinental Championship, Wembley Stadium, England
At SummerSlam on August 29, 1992, Davey Boy Smith defeated Bret Hart at Wembley Stadium to win the Intercontinental Championship. WWE calls Smith a native of England, making this a home-country connection—not proof that Wembley was his specific hometown. WWE’s retrospective recounts the title-changing reversal of Hart’s sunset flip.
-
Trish Stratus — WWE Women’s Championship, Toronto
At Unforgiven on September 17, 2006, Toronto native Stratus defeated Lita to win the WWE Women’s Championship for the seventh time. WWE identifies Stratus as a Toronto native in its retrospective.

-
William Regal — Intercontinental Championship, Manchester
On Raw on November 10, 2008, Regal defeated Santino Marella in Manchester to win the Intercontinental Championship. The connection is regional rather than an exact hometown match: WWE says Manchester is “just a short distance from Regal’s hometown of Blackpool.” WWE’s retrospective makes that distinction clear.

Why this is not a ten-wrestler list
The available evidence supports these seven entries, not ten. WWE’s retrospective is a curated collection of hometown victories, and some of its matches were not title changes. Adding those would answer a different question. Likewise, an event result showing that a championship changed hands in a city does not establish that the winner was from there. Jinder Mahal’s 2017 WWE Championship win in Chicago, for example, establishes the event location but not a hometown connection.
No complete count of WWE hometown title wins is established by these examples, so seven should be read as the number verified here—not as a definitive total.
