Chainsaw Man offers a compelling but different draw: Denji’s poverty, devil hunting, and his bond with Pochita. “Better” comes down to which dark-fantasy experience you want, not an objective ranking.
1. Its central conflict is easy to grasp
VIZ frames Jujutsu Kaisen around sorcerers defending people from cursed spirits, with the scattered parts of Sukuna’s body carrying the potential to give demons world-threatening power. That gives the story a legible external engine: protect people from curses while confronting the danger associated with Sukuna. Readers who like a clear supernatural threat may prefer that structure. VIZ’s series overview establishes the premise, not a universal verdict on its storytelling.
2. Yuji enters the story through loyalty
Yuji Itadori is drawn into the conflict after acting to save his friends, according to VIZ. That origin gives the danger an immediate personal stake: his involvement begins with a choice to protect people close to him, rather than simply a career decision. It is a persuasive advantage for readers who want a protagonist’s first step into a fantasy world to grow out of loyalty. VIZ’s synopsis supports the setup; the preference is a matter of taste.
3. The supernatural framework gives battles a language
Jujutsu Kaisen builds its conflicts from sorcerers, curses, and Sukuna’s threat. That framework gives readers terms and stakes to follow as confrontations unfold. Its appeal for a rules-oriented action fan is not that every ability is automatically simple or every fight objectively superior; it is that the series invites attention to how supernatural forces shape the conflict. VIZ’s official summary establishes the broad framework, while the exact mechanics and examples belong to the manga and anime themselves. VIZ’s series page.

4. The school premise supports an ensemble
A school of sorcerers creates a natural place for allies, rivals, teachers, and missions to intersect. That institutional setting can make the world feel larger than a single protagonist’s assignments: relationships and the group’s shared role in confronting curses become part of the appeal. VIZ identifies the mysterious school as part of the premise. Whether its ensemble works better for a particular reader depends on the characters and moments they value, not on the premise alone. VIZ’s overview.
5. It combines school life with serious stakes
The contrast between a school setting and a threat to the living world gives Jujutsu Kaisen two scales of story to play with: a recurring community and dangers that reach far beyond it. If you enjoy stories that can move between relationships shaped by an institution and escalating supernatural peril, that blend may suit you more than Chainsaw Man’s focus on Denji’s life as a devil hunter. This is an interpretation of the premises, not a claim that one tone is inherently better. VIZ on Jujutsu Kaisen; VIZ on Chainsaw Man.
6. It is a natural fit for supernatural-action fans
VIZ’s Jujutsu Kaisen anime-guide listing categorizes the franchise with action, horror, school life, and supernatural material. That combination signals a particular flavor of action: battles framed by curses and sorcerers, set against a school-based community. If that mix is what you seek, Jujutsu Kaisen makes a strong case. Genre labels do not prove that every viewer will prefer its fights, and anime and manga should be judged as distinct experiences. VIZ’s Season 1 anime guide listing.
7. You can check chapter availability before buying
VIZ’s official chapter pages for both titles provide chapter-reading and volume-purchase options, and indicate that the latest free chapters may be available through MANGA Plus by Shueisha depending on the reader’s location. Availability can vary by region and date, so check the pages where you live rather than assuming the same chapters or purchase options are available everywhere.

This is a practical way to sample the source material, not evidence that Jujutsu Kaisen is universally easier or cheaper to access.
8. Its catalog suits readers who want a shelf collection
VIZ lists Jujutsu Kaisen manga volumes and a complete box set. For a reader who prefers collecting a series in print, that gives the title a clear physical-format appeal. The catalog also lists Chainsaw Man volumes and box sets, so the existence of a Jujutsu Kaisen box set does not establish that its collection is cheaper, more complete, or easier to find. Retail stock and regional availability may change. Jujutsu Kaisen’s VIZ catalog; Chainsaw Man’s VIZ catalog.
9. The anime has a production-focused companion book
For fans interested in how an adaptation is made, VIZ describes the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Official Anime Guide as including concept art, original storyboards, character designs, interviews, voice-actor commentary, and posters. That makes it a concrete companion for exploring the production rather than just watching the finished episodes. It is a catalog feature, not proof that the anime itself is better than Chainsaw Man’s. VIZ’s guide listing.

The difference between these series is clearest in their official premises. Jujutsu Kaisen foregrounds curses, sorcerer institutions, and a danger tied to Sukuna; Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a poor young devil hunter killed on a job and revived through his bond with Pochita, his devil-dog companion. VIZ says both began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018, but they offer distinct entry points into dark fantasy. If the sorcerer-and-curses package is more appealing to you, preferring Jujutsu Kaisen is a reasoned choice—not an objective scorecard. Jujutsu Kaisen; Chainsaw Man.

What the adaptation listings can—and cannot—tell you
VIZ lists Chainsaw Man Season 1 as 12 episodes with a total running time of 360 minutes. That describes the listed release only; episode count and runtime do not establish adaptation quality, and the figure is not a comparison with Jujutsu Kaisen. VIZ also lists manga volumes and box sets for both franchises, alongside the Jujutsu Kaisen anime guide. VIZ’s Chainsaw Man Season 1 listing; Jujutsu Kaisen catalog; Chainsaw Man catalog.
The case for Jujutsu Kaisen is strongest when your priorities are a legible supernatural conflict, a school-centered ensemble, and action built around sorcerers and curses. If Denji’s harsher devil-hunter premise is what you want, Chainsaw Man may be the better fit for you instead.
