WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event January 2025 match card
Gunther vs. Jey Uso — World Heavyweight Championship
Gunther defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso in the show’s headline match. Uso was pursuing his first world championship, while Gunther attempted to reinforce his position as one of WWE’s most dominant singles champions.

The storyline centered on Gunther questioning whether Uso had proved himself outside of tag-team wrestling. Uso’s challenge was therefore more than a title opportunity: it was a chance to establish himself as a legitimate singles main-event wrestler. Their conflict developed after the two men became involved in a confrontation on Raw.
Pre-event prediction: Gunther was the safer pick to retain. He was the established champion, and the match was presented as a major test of Uso’s singles credibility rather than as an obvious title-change program. Uso had a compelling emotional case, but Gunther’s momentum made a retention the more defensible prediction.
Actual result: Gunther defeated Jey Uso to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. Uso connected with two Spears and an Uso Splash, but Gunther survived the attack and won after delivering two Powerbombs.
Rhea Ripley vs. Nia Jax — Women’s World Championship
Rhea Ripley put the Women’s World Championship on the line against Nia Jax. The match was arranged after Jax attacked Ripley on the January 20 episode of Raw.

Jax brought a very different threat: her size, strength and willingness to impose herself physically on the champion. Jax also spoke about ambitions beyond the match, including winning the Royal Rumble and challenging for a championship at WrestleMania.
Pre-event prediction: Ripley was the logical favorite. Jax’s attack created a quick, high-impact title program, but Ripley remained the established champion and the story did not strongly signal an immediate change of title.

Actual result: Rhea Ripley defeated Nia Jax to retain the Women’s World Championship. Jax hit Ripley with a headbutt before the bell, but Ripley countered Jax’s Annihilator attempt and finished the match with Riptide.
Bron Breakker vs. Sheamus — Intercontinental Championship
Bron Breakker defended the Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus. The bout was built around the contrast between Breakker’s youth, explosive athleticism and confidence and Sheamus’s experience as a veteran who had won virtually every major WWE prize except this one.
Recommended Free Tools
Sheamus’s pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship gave the challenger a strong emotional narrative. The title was the significant WWE singles championship missing from his résumé, making the match an especially credible potential-upset opportunity.
Pre-event prediction: This was arguably the hardest title match on the card to call. Sheamus had the strongest “unfinished business” story, but Breakker’s reign and momentum made a retention just as plausible. A Sheamus prediction was reasonable if the emotional story was given priority; a Breakker prediction was safer from a championship-booking perspective.
Actual result: Bron Breakker defeated Sheamus to retain the Intercontinental Championship. Breakker targeted Sheamus’s injured ribs and ultimately won with a Spear.
Braun Strowman vs. Jacob Fatu
Braun Strowman faced Jacob Fatu in a non-title heavyweight match. The contest was promoted as a collision between Strowman’s size and established reputation and Fatu’s destructive, unpredictable presentation.

The match also connected to Strowman’s recent interactions with members of The Bloodline. Fatu entered as a dangerous challenger who appeared capable of turning a standard match into a chaotic fight at any moment.
Pre-event prediction: This was the least predictable match on the card. Strowman’s power and veteran status supported a Strowman pick, while Fatu’s protected presentation made a Fatu victory—or an uncontrolled finish—equally believable.
Actual result: Braun Strowman defeated Jacob Fatu by disqualification. Fatu refused to stop attacking Strowman in the corner, threw the referee out of the ring and continued the assault after the decision. The finish protected Fatu from a conventional loss while giving Strowman the official win.
Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens contract signing
This was a featured segment, not a match. Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens were scheduled to sign the contract addendum for their Undisputed WWE Championship Ladder Match at the Royal Rumble.

His presence gave the segment a built-in point of conflict, especially given the repeated confrontations between Rhodes and Owens.
Pre-event prediction: The signing was highly likely to collapse into a physical confrontation. A peaceful contract signing would have been out of step with the rivalry’s tone and with the usual purpose of placing a contract segment on a major broadcast.
