WWE confirmed that Michael Jones, known to wrestling fans as Virgil, died on February 28, 2024. Many initial reports listed him as 61, while F4W/WON reported he was 72; WWE’s announcement did not give his age or a cause of death. Virgil is best remembered for serving as Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard before their rivalry made him a star in his own right.
What was confirmed about Virgil’s death?
WWE announced that Jones had died on February 28, 2024, describing him as “Michael Jones, known to WWE fans as Virgil.” Its official obituary confirmed his death and reviewed his wrestling career, but did not state his age or medical cause of death.
F4W/WON reported that Jones passed at a hospital and reproduced an announcement attributed to friend and referee Mark Charles III. That announcement identified Jones as Virgil, Vincent and Soul Train Jones; it was not a medical explanation for his death.
How old was Virgil? Reports disagreed
| Source | Age reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Yahoo Entertainment / People, February 28, 2024 | 61 | The age in the title-matching report and many initial stories. |
| F4W/WON, February 28, 2024 | 72 | A contemporaneous report giving a different age. |
| WWE obituary | Not stated | Confirms his death and career highlights without resolving the age discrepancy. |
The available reports do not settle which age is correct. It is therefore more accurate to describe 61 as the age widely reported initially, while noting that F4W/WON reported 72, rather than present either figure as definitively confirmed.

Why Virgil mattered to WWE fans
From Soul Train Jones to DiBiase’s bodyguard
WWE’s career profile says Jones made his in-ring debut in Tennessee in 1987 as “Soul Train” Jones. He teamed with Rocky Johnson and found success in the AWA Southern Tag Team Championship scene before arriving in WWE later that year as the bodyguard of the Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase.
The role placed Virgil beside one of wrestling’s most recognizable villains: DiBiase’s quiet enforcer, expected to follow orders and stand behind his employer. Their eventual split gave Virgil a story of his own. WWE’s obituary recalls the rivalry and notes that Virgil won the Million Dollar Championship at SummerSlam 1991.

“An incredible athlete” was part of a tribute by GCW founder Brett Lauderdale, not a phrase from WWE’s obituary. Lauderdale described Virgil as “an incredible athlete and a reliable soldier,” praising him as a performer. The wording captures both his in-ring ability and the dependable supporting role that made him familiar to wrestling audiences.
