For looping one prerecorded file on YouTube Live, FFmpeg is the direct self-managed encoder; Wowza Streaming Engine is useful when you specifically need a media server in the workflow. They are not interchangeable products: FFmpeg can send a stream directly to YouTube, while the documented Wowza workflow sends FFmpeg output into a configured Wowza live application. Wowza Video is a separate managed service with its own file-loop feature.
Which should you choose?
| Choose | When it fits | What you operate |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg directly to YouTube | You want to send a prerecorded file to YouTube Live without inserting Wowza Streaming Engine. | The FFmpeg command, the computer or host running it, and stream-health monitoring. |
| FFmpeg with Wowza Streaming Engine | You already need Wowza Streaming Engine as part of a wider media-server workflow. | FFmpeg plus a configured Wowza live application and its incoming stream setup. |
| Wowza Video | You prefer Wowza’s managed service and its documented source-file looping capability. | The transcoder lifecycle, including stopping it when the loop should end. |
The reviewed official documentation does not establish a universal winner for cost, reliability, or performance. Nor does it establish that Wowza Streaming Engine is required for every YouTube loop.
How FFmpeg and Wowza Streaming Engine differ
FFmpeg is the encoder path
Wowza documents FFmpeg as a live encoder and gives the general command form ffmpeg [input-options] -i [input-file] [output-options] [output-stream-URI]. For a direct YouTube workflow, the output destination is YouTube’s ingest server URL and stream key; the Wowza Engine hop is not inherently needed.
For file playback at its native rate, Wowza’s restream guide says to use FFmpeg’s -re option. It instructs the encoder to read the source at its native frame rate, which simulates live streaming and helps mitigate buffering and memory buildup. In Wowza’s Engine workflow, FFmpeg sends output to a configured Wowza live application, and the guide also calls for configuring a stream-file URI for the incoming stream. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wowza Video is a different product
Do not confuse Wowza Video with Wowza Streaming Engine. Wowza Video’s managed workflow downloads a source file when a live stream or transcoder starts. Its default is to play the file once; an advanced transcoder property enables continuous looping. That loop overrides the transcoder idle timeout, so charges continue until you manually stop the transcoder. Wowza says a schedule can be used to stop it. [Wowza: Loop a file in Wowza Video]
Send a looping file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
The exact command depends on the file’s codecs and the output options you need. YouTube supplies the destination values and its current encoder requirements; use the values for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate meant for a different format.

- Create the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Choose the encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation that should not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure the host’s actual upload capacity can sustain it. [YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
- Build and start the FFmpeg command. Use the input file after
-i, include-rewhen you want file input read at native playback speed, set output options to match YouTube’s requirements, and send the output to the YouTube server URL with the stream key. Protect the key as you would a password. YouTube’s and Wowza’s linked guides show their respective setup details; the proper output options vary with the source and target settings. - Verify before relying on the loop. Test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room. A still or low-motion file may not expose the same encoding or network problems as a busy scene.
YouTube’s current guidance accessed 2026-10-03 recommends a two-second keyframe interval, says not to exceed four seconds, and lists a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. As one example rather than a universal setting, its current table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. These are platform configuration recommendations, not independently measured performance results. [YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
When to put Wowza Streaming Engine in the chain
Use Engine when its media-server role is part of the system you need, not simply because the video repeats. In the documented restream arrangement, configure a Wowza live application and incoming stream, then point FFmpeg’s output at that Wowza destination. The Engine adds another component to configure and monitor; the cited guides do not claim that this step is necessary for a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream.

YouTube settings, archives, and rights checks
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes the stream key as password-like. Keep it private and reset it if it is exposed; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your destination. [YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings]
Understand the archive threshold
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold is not a guarantee that a longer stream will be archived. [YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming]

Check rights and platform rules before going live
Confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast the video and its audio, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content. The cited setup guidance says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream; that does not establish that every looped stream is eligible or compliant. Repeating a file is a technical workflow, not proof of rights or policy eligibility.
