Short answer: Castr is the more direct fit if you want a managed service that sends an encoder feed to YouTube and explicitly supports unlimited event duration while your subscription is active and has enough streaming bandwidth. Wowza Streaming Engine is configurable server software for teams that need control over deployment, protocols, or media-server workflows—and are prepared to operate the infrastructure around it. Neither option guarantees an uninterrupted end-to-end YouTube stream.
What each product does in a 24/7 workflow
These products overlap, but they are not interchangeable versions of the same thing. The key distinction is who manages the streaming layer and how much control your team needs.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Castr for a managed encoder-to-YouTube workflow
Castr is the more straightforward match when the goal is to send a live encoder source through a managed platform to YouTube, without choosing and maintaining your own media-server deployment. Its help article states that live duration is unlimited provided the subscription stays active and there is enough streaming bandwidth. That qualification matters: source, internet, YouTube, or service interruptions remain possible.

Its YouTube guide documents connecting by API or entering YouTube’s streaming server and key. When using a key, the guide says the stream description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard. It also recommends disabling destinations while the source is offline and enabling them again after the encoder source is live, to help avoid reconnection problems.
Choose Wowza Streaming Engine for deployment and protocol control
Wowza is better aligned with teams that need a configurable media server, deployment choice, or support for a particular input protocol. Its published technical list includes RTMP, RTSP/RTP, SRT, WebRTC, and MPEG-TS, but the list alone does not establish that a particular source will work without configuration. Match the source’s protocol and codecs to the intended deployment before committing.

This control comes with operating responsibility. Include the server or cloud environment, bandwidth or CDN where applicable, engineering time, support, monitoring, and recovery work in the decision—not just the software license.

Wowza prices are license terms, not a total estimate for servers, bandwidth, CDN, engineering, or support. Castr’s bandwidth and stream allocations are plan-limited; confirm how its current allowance maps to your expected bitrate and viewer delivery. Castr’s pricing page also advertises a “99.9% uptime SLA.” That is Castr’s own published claim, not an independent measurement or a head-to-head reliability result; review the applicable plan and service terms. Source equipment, setup, and recovery responsibilities
An encoder is the source, not the whole 24/7 system
YouTube defines an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. A hardware encoder can suit a dedicated always-on source, but the cited material does not establish that one is required; source type and operational needs determine the choice. YouTube’s overview is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
For a Castr path, its setup guide describes configuring the encoder with Castr’s RTMP server URL and stream key, then adding YouTube as a destination. The exact source format, codecs, and settings still need to be checked against the encoder and destination. For Wowza, determine how the source enters the configured server and how the output reaches YouTube; do not assume the server license alone supplies a finished account-to-destination workflow.

Plan and test the full path, not just the service
- Confirm the source protocol and codec are accepted by the selected workflow, and identify any encoder or transcoding step required.
- Estimate continuous bitrate and delivery bandwidth, then compare that estimate with the applicable plan limits and charges.
- Decide who owns stream-key handling, monitoring, alerting, destination reconnection, and overnight restart response.
- Test the actual source-to-YouTube path, including the recovery procedure for source, power, internet, server, and destination interruptions.
- Check that you have the necessary rights for the video, music, and other material in a loop. A streaming platform does not grant content rights or settle YouTube’s copyright and reused-content questions.
Reliability: what the available claims do and do not establish
Castr’s unlimited-duration statement is conditional on an active subscription and sufficient bandwidth; it does not say that a source, network, YouTube destination, or service cannot fail. Wowza’s reviewed materials do not establish a directly comparable unlimited-duration Engine-to-YouTube commitment. The advertised Castr SLA is not evidence that Castr is more reliable than Wowza for a particular channel.
For either setup, ask what service terms apply to your exact plan or deployment and test failure detection, reconnection, and restart with the real equipment and network. An uptime figure for one service layer cannot by itself establish the availability of the entire path from source to YouTube.
