That was an expression of his willingness, not a casting announcement. His later Marvel Cinematic Universe return is as Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday—not a confirmed return as Tony Stark.
What did Robert Downey Jr. say about playing Iron Man again?
Asked by Esquire whether he would put on the red suit again, Downey answered: “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.” The interview, by Josh Rosenberg, was published April 8, 2024. Read the Esquire interview.
His words described a personal openness to the role. They did not say Marvel had offered him the part, approved a project, or decided to bring Tony Stark back.
Why an Iron Man return is a separate question
Tony Stark died after sacrificing himself to stop Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019). In the same 2024 Esquire story, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the studio wanted to leave that ending intact: “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.” Esquire’s report places Downey’s openness alongside Feige’s stated position.

ABC News’ April 8, 2024 report also noted that Downey had previously described a return as “off the table” unless a compelling case emerged, while saying he wanted to pursue other work. That history helps explain why the “Happily” answer was notable, but it does not turn it into a confirmed plan. ABC News’ coverage.
What is Downey’s later Marvel return?
2026 coverage reports Downey returning to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, or Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. GamesRadar reported that he described his reason for returning as “the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies.” The Associated Press also identifies him as Doctor Doom in the film. These reports establish a Marvel return in a different role; they do not confirm that he is reprising Iron Man.
