Yes. The New York Times Games announced that Wordle would begin bringing previously used answers back into play on Monday, February 2, 2026, while continuing to introduce first-time answers. The announcement did not say how often repeats would appear or how they would be chosen.
What changed in Wordle?
The change is to Wordle’s pool of daily answers: a word that has already been an answer may be used again. The New York Times Games announcement, reproduced by TechRadar, also said first-time answers would continue to debut.
That does not mean the game announced an end to new words, nor does it establish that every past answer will return. It means past answers are no longer necessarily excluded from future play.
When did the change take effect?
TechRadar reported on January 29, 2026, that the announcement had appeared in the New York Times’ January 28 Gameplay newsletter. It said the change would begin “Starting on Monday.” A February 1 report by Mashable via Yahoo Tech identified that Monday as February 2, 2026.

What did the New York Times announce?
TechRadar reproduced the New York Times Games statement as follows: “Starting on Monday, we will begin adding previously run words back into play. There are still many first-time answers to debut, but also more chances for Wordle in ones and those magical, serendipitous moments when Wordle overlaps with real life.”
The wording confirms that repeats would be added alongside new answers. It does not provide a schedule or a detailed account of the selection process.

What is still unknown about repeat answers?
The announcement did not specify:
- How often a previously used answer might return.
- Whether all past answers would eventually be eligible again.
- Whether answers would be selected randomly, on a fixed rotation, or by another method.
TechRadar also noted that the implementation details were not known when it reported the announcement. The available reporting does not establish Wordle’s current repeat schedule as of October 2026, so claims about a particular rotation or frequency should not be treated as confirmed.

Before the change, a list of past answers could help players rule out words that had already appeared. Once past answers can return, that kind of elimination list is less reliable: a previously used word may again be a possible answer. This is a practical implication of the policy, not a measured change in difficulty or win rates.

TechRadar’s Marc McLaren suggested that reuse could reduce the advantage of consulting past-answer lists and help extend the game’s lifespan. That was the reporter’s analysis, not a reason given by the New York Times Games announcement, and the available reporting does not verify a resulting effect on players.
