On the May 7, 2025, episode of Jeopardy!, contestant Dan Moren answered “What is Pike’s Place Market?” Host Ken Jennings rejected it and supplied a Seattle-style correction: “We are sticklers in Seattle. It’s PIKE Place. No ‘s.’”
What happened on Jeopardy!
The exchange came during a clue in the category “They almost tore it down”: “If the 1960s plan to replace this Seattle market with high-rises had succeeded, there might be no Starbucks today.” Moren, a writer and podcaster from Massachusetts, responded, “What is Pike’s Place Market?” Jennings said, “No. Sorry, Dan,” then corrected the name.
The episode aired Wednesday, May 7, 2025; GeekWire and KIRO 7 reported on the exchange on May 9. Those reports do not identify the season or episode number.
Is it Pike Place or Pike’s Place Market?
The proper name is Pike Place Market. “Pike’s Place” is a common mistaken version, but the Market is named for Pike Place, not for a person named Pike who owns it. KIRO reports that Pike Street was named in 1869 by Arthur Denny for his friend John Pike. The Market’s official history says Seattle City Council authorized a public farmers market on Pike Place on August 5, 1907, and it opened on August 17. Pike Place Market’s official history traces that founding.

Why the clue mentioned a near-demolition
The clue’s redevelopment premise has a documented historical basis. The Market’s official history says the 1963 Pike Plaza Project proposed razing a 20-acre area that included the Market and replacing it with a terraced garage, park, hotel and office buildings; versions of the proposal included high-rises. Preservation efforts followed, and Friends of the Market formed in 1964.
The clue also says that, if the plan had succeeded, “there might be no Starbucks today.” KIRO reports that the first Starbucks opened in March 1971, but the sources do not establish that the Market’s survival directly caused Starbucks to exist. That line is counterfactual clue wording, not a proven causal conclusion.

A Seattle landmark, not just a spelling trap
Pike Place Market is a nine-acre historic public market in downtown Seattle, above Elliott Bay near Pike Street and First Avenue. Founded in 1907, it is operated by the Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority. Its official website provides visitor and Market information.
The Market’s name and iconic imagery also have formal protections: the Market says its Preservation & Development Authority owns rights to the Market name and associated names, the Public Market Center clock and sign image, and other iconic imagery. Commercial product use requires an approved licensing agreement, according to its official site.
