Woman of the Hour is Anna Kendrick’s 2024 directorial debut, a drama based on the real encounter between aspiring actor Cheryl Bradshaw and serial killer Rodney Alcala on the television show The Dating Game. Its unsettling true-crime approach puts the women targeted by Alcala—not the killer’s point of view—at the center. That makes the film distinctive, though the claim that it “revitalizes” the genre is an interpretation, not an established fact.
What is Woman of the Hour about?
Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the film follows Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actor who appears as a contestant on The Dating Game. One of the bachelors is Rodney Alcala, a man whose television charm conceals the danger he poses. Netflix describes the story as the intersection of Bradshaw’s and Alcala’s paths on the show.
Netflix presents the film as based on a true story. As in many historical dramas, the screen version includes dramatization: director Anna Kendrick and screenwriter Ian McDonald researched the documented history, but Kendrick said gaps in the record had to be filled in for the film. Netflix Tudum reported that Kendrick’s research included her Newspapers.com subscription; that account describes her process, not independent verification of every scene.
How does the film approach true crime differently?
The film’s distinction is less a demonstrable renewal of the genre than a choice about perspective. The Associated Press described it as “not your standard true crime dramatization,” noting that Alcala’s perspective is not the one that matters. The story directs attention toward the women he targeted and the gendered vulnerability surrounding their encounters, rather than treating the killer as the main source of fascination.

That framing changes the kind of tension the story creates. Instead of relying only on the question of what Alcala will do, the film asks viewers to notice how ordinary social expectations, including pressure to be agreeable, can constrain women’s choices. Kendrick told Netflix Tudum she liked “the complicated journey of a woman who is shrinking herself and being very pleasing and then manages to rebel and take back some power.” The quote describes an element of Bradshaw’s characterization, not a claim that the film speaks for every woman’s experience.
Calling the film a genre-reviving work is therefore a critical judgment, not a measurable result. The available evidence establishes its victim-centered emphasis and an atypical perspective; it does not establish a broad critical consensus or a measurable effect on the true-crime genre.
Who made it, and when was it released?
Kendrick both directs and stars in Woman of the Hour. Netflix Tudum reports that she was initially attached to star and later took on directing. Netflix’s US release schedule began with select theatrical showings on October 11, 2024, followed by streaming on Netflix in the US on October 18, 2024. It is a 2024 film, not a new release; distribution and catalog availability can vary by region.
How long is it, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press review reports a runtime of 94 minutes and an R rating for language, violent content, some drug use, and a sexual reference. Those details can help viewers decide whether the film is suitable for them; the rating and content description do not imply that the film is a documentary or an unaltered record of events.
