When did Hathaway and Follieri split?
Contemporary reports said Hathaway and Follieri had split shortly before his arrest. A Reuters report republished by ABC News in September 2008 said they had dated for four years and separated just before the arrest. A more precise claim—that the breakup came six hours before it—was attributed by ABC News to Vanity Fair, rather than established independently by the other contemporaneous reports. Follieri later told ABC News in a 2012 interview that Hathaway left before his arrest. That is his retrospective account; the contemporary reporting establishes the broad timing, not every private detail of their separation. ABC News, June 26, 2012.
What was Follieri accused of?
Follieri was arrested on June 24, 2008, and charged with conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors alleged that between 2005 and 2007 he misled investors about his close connections to the Vatican, claiming those ties would help him acquire unwanted Catholic Church properties at discounted prices. Those claims were allegations at the time of the arrest, not a finding of guilt. ABC News Australia (Reuters), June 25, 2008.

On September 10, 2008, Follieri pleaded guilty to 14 counts involving conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. Reuters reported that he told the court, “I knew what I was doing was wrong.” The plea—not the earlier arrest—is the point at which he admitted guilt to the charged conduct. In October 2008, a federal judge sentenced him to four years and six months in prison and ordered three years of supervision after his release. The report said he would be deported to Italy after completing his sentence. ABC News Australia (Reuters), October 25, 2008.

In remarks from a W magazine interview quoted by ABC News, Hathaway said she had been preparing to travel for press events for Get Smart when she learned of the arrest. She said she stayed at a friend’s home for a week and left the New York apartment she had shared with Follieri. Her description of the shock and the support she received was: “It’s a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden. But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me.” ABC News, September 10, 2008; Corriere della Sera, September 11, 2008.
Those reported remarks describe her reaction and the support of friends. They do not establish her full private reasons for ending the relationship. The available reports place the split shortly before the arrest, but do not show that Hathaway knew about, participated in or endorsed Follieri’s alleged scheme.
