The reports differ on the complainant’s name: UOL identifies him as musician Leonardo, while Black Brazil Today names him as Jesus Cleino. Because the accounts do not agree, it is safer to refer to him as the complainant rather than assert a full identity. Black Brazil Today published its account on March 5, 2024: Black Brazil Today.

The complainant’s account
UOL reported that the complainant said the woman commented that there had not previously been so many Black people in the cinema. When he challenged her, he said she replied, “Entenda como quiser” (“Take it any way you want”). Black Brazil Today published an English rendering of his recollection: “I said, so you’re telling me that black people can’t go to the movies, is that what you’re saying? And she said, ‘No, but take it any way you like.’” These are reported recollections, not a verified recording or transcript.

The woman’s account
UOL quoted the woman, identified there as Bruna, explaining that she was surprised to see a predominantly Black audience, which she considered rare in southern Brazil, and that she felt represented by the film. This is her reported explanation of what she meant, not an established finding about her intent.
What police reported
According to a Santa Catarina Military Police statement quoted by UOL, the woman acknowledged commenting on the number of Black people in the theater, said she had not intended to offend anyone, and apologized to the complainant. UOL reported that police detained her and forwarded the case to the Civil Police. That describes the reported police response; it does not establish guilt or the outcome of any subsequent legal process.

What is known about the case’s aftermath
UOL said it requested further information from police bodies. The reports cited here do not say whether prosecutors filed charges, whether a court considered the case, or how it was ultimately resolved. The arrest and referral should therefore not be presented as a conviction or a definitive legal finding.
