The strongest place to start is their debut-era encounter in The Incredible Hulk #181, where Wolverine first appears amid a larger Hulk–Wendigo fight. The stories below are not an official ranking; they are a concise guide to the documented clashes and their different continuities.
1. The debut-era encounter: The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974)
Wolverine made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181, published November 1, 1974. Marvel’s issue listing bills the story as one of the Hulk’s greatest battles, but the fight is not a straightforward duel: the issue places Wolverine in the middle of a ferocious confrontation involving the Hulk and Wendigo. That larger struggle is part of what makes the debut memorable, rather than a clean contest with a simple winner.

Readers looking for the original issue’s story in a readily identified edition can look for Marvel’s 2019 facsimile of The Incredible Hulk #181, credited to Len Wein and Herb Trimpe.
2. The saga continues: The Incredible Hulk #182
The next issue continues the story, but it should not be described as an entire issue devoted to a Wolverine rematch. Marvel’s facsimile listing says Wolverine has “joined the Hulk in a three-way tussle against the monstrous Wendigo!” The issue then carries the Hulk toward a collision with Hammer and Anvil. It is best read as the continuation of the debut-era saga, not as a separate, neatly isolated one-on-one bout.

3. A rescue under pressure: Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours #1–4 (2003)
This four-issue series gives the pairing a different kind of test: Marvel describes a timed rescue in the Canadian wilderness. The premise makes the story a tense team-up as much as a fight; the central question is how the two characters handle a dangerous objective together, not simply which one can overpower the other.
Marvel’s Hulk Legends Vol. 1: Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours is a trade paperback collecting Hulk/Wolverine: 6 Hours (2003) #1–4 and The Incredible Hulk #181. The collection therefore pairs the later story with Wolverine’s debut-era encounter.
4. An alternate-continuity showdown: Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk #1–6 (2005–2009)
Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk is a six-issue series published from 2005 to 2009. It belongs to Marvel’s Ultimate continuity, so it should be kept separate from the main-continuity stories above. Its title promises a direct confrontation, but the available official series listing establishes the series and its issue count rather than a detailed account of individual fight scenes or their outcomes.
Rank #3
Marvel’s series listing for Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk is the reference point for its publication span and six-issue run.
Who would win, Wolverine or the Hulk?
These stories do not establish a universal winner. Wolverine’s claws and ability to recover from injury make him a dangerous opponent, while the Hulk’s strength gives him a radically different advantage; the outcome depends on the particular story, its objective and its continuity. The debut issue is also a poor basis for declaring a winner in a pure one-on-one contest because Wendigo is part of the conflict.
