Why did Wolverine’s Deadpool 3 suit bring people to tears? At a pre-shoot camera test, Hugh Jackman walked out in Wolverine’s familiar yellow-and-blue costume, and executive producer Wendy Jacobson recalled crew members sobbing. Ryan Reynolds separately said he had never seen a crew react that way. Their accounts describe a striking moment on set—not a measured or universal audience response.
Why the yellow-and-blue reveal carried so much weight
For years, Jackman’s screen Wolverine had appeared in other looks. In a July 11, 2024 Variety interview, Jackman said the first X-Men film was being made when black leather was the prevailing approach. He had accepted that as how Wolverine should look, then was surprised by how right the yellow costume felt when he finally wore it: “As soon as I put it on, I couldn’t believe I never had before.”
The comic-inspired colors and silhouette made the character immediately legible as the Wolverine many readers recognized. The costume did not replace the character; it gave a familiar screen portrayal a look that had been missing from Jackman’s earlier films. Marvel’s official film page describes Wade Wilson being pulled back into action and persuading a reluctant Wolverine to help save his homeworld.
Jacobson’s recollection was specific: the moment happened at a camera test, before filming began, as Jackman and Reynolds appeared together in costume. She told The Independent on July 19, 2024 that “there were grown men, like, sobbing on set,” calling it a special moment. Reynolds also told Variety, “I’ve never seen a crew reaction like that.” Those are accounts of the production crew’s response, not evidence that audiences generally cried.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige described the long-awaited look by comparing it to Superman appearing in multiple films without his Superman costume. He also stressed that Wolverine mattered beyond the suit. The point is not that a costume alone makes a character; it is that this particular design condensed a recognizable comic-book identity and years of screen history into one reveal.
How the costume was built for movement
The yellow-and-blue suit had to translate comic and visual-development artwork into a wearable three-dimensional costume, while standing up to stunt work. Costume-effects vendor FBFX says it worked with Marvel’s visual-development team and used scans of Jackman to develop Wolverine’s silhouette. Its brief included comfort, function and durability as well as a close visual match.

Details shaped by action
- Claw movement: Flexibility had to allow Wolverine’s signature claw move.
- Stance: The tactical vest helped maintain the character’s recognizable posture.
- Gloves: They were sewn partially curved, supporting the hand shape associated with the character.
- Materials: FBFX says it customized and printed fabrics in different weights for breathability, structure, compression and function. Vacuum-formed parts and foam added shape, strength and protection.
A cowl designed for filming
The cowl required multiple digital and physical iterations as the team translated a two-dimensional design into a three-dimensional object. Its faceplate was removable and held by magnets, making it easier to take off between takes. FBFX reports making 22 suits for production and a few more for promotion.

The crew anecdote helps explain why the reveal resonated with people who had waited to see Jackman in this version of Wolverine. It does not establish how many moviegoers or fans cried, or show that the reaction was universal: no representative statistic on audience tears is established in the cited accounts. Separately, the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer received 365 million online views in its first 24 hours, according to Associated Press reporting from April 25, 2024. That figure indicates broad anticipation for the trailer, not suit-specific interest.
