Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull: What Is Confirmed About the Exclusive D&D Action Game

Wizards of the Coast has signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Giant Skull, a studio founded by Stig Asmussen, to publish a single-player action-adventure game set in the Dungeons & Dragons world for PC and console. That is the core of what was announced in early June 2025. Beyond the deal itself, the public record is thin: no title, release window or gameplay footage had been revealed in the coverage we could confirm, and nothing newer has surfaced since mid-2025.

What was announced

The announcement had three parts. Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro subsidiary that owns Dungeons & Dragons, would act as the publisher. Giant Skull would develop the game. The product would be a single-player action-adventure title rather than a turn-based or party-based role-playing game, and it would come to PC and consoles. Coverage from GamesBeat and Variety reported these points at announcement.

Why the deal matters for D&D games

Wizards’ most visible recent D&D video game is Baldur’s Gate 3, made by Larian Studios. Variety reported that the Giant Skull agreement followed the end of Wizards’ pact with Larian. That context explains the shift in approach: Wizards is now signing a publishing relationship with a newer studio, not extending an arrangement with an established RPG developer. The two deals are different in structure and should not be compared as if they were the same type of contract.

Relationship with Wizards Licensed partnership, ended at the close of Wizards’ pact with Larian Exclusive publishing agreement
Genre Role-playing game (CRPG) Single-player action-adventure

The studio: Giant Skull

Giant Skull was founded in 2023 by Stig Asmussen, who serves as CEO. Before starting the studio, Asmussen was game director on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. He also worked on God of War III, which is the project where he first met John Hight, the Wizards executive who later pursued the deal. Giant Skull is therefore a small studio led by a director whose recent work has been in action-adventure games, which is consistent with the genre announced.

The executive: John Hight

John Hight is president of Wizards of the Coast and president of digital gaming at Hasbro. At the time of the announcement he had been running the Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons game and licensing business for under a year. Before joining Wizards, he was senior vice president and general manager of Warcraft at Blizzard. In an interview with GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi, which was conducted at Summer Game Fest Play Days, Hight described a goal of building a digital publishing division at Wizards.

How the partnership began

According to The Game Business, Asmussen invited Hight to see Giant Skull’s first prototype after Asmussen left Respawn. Hight was impressed and asked whether the studio would consider a Wizards or Hasbro intellectual property. The team reviewed a number of options and chose Dungeons & Dragons. Asmussen said the decision was not difficult because D&D fits the kind of work his team had done before, including God of War and the Jedi series. A GamesRadar headline quoting Asmussen described the studio’s wish to “sink our teeth into something that’s legendary, that’s mythical.” Only that headline wording was confirmed.

  • Title and release window: none had been announced at launch of the deal, and no later reveal was found.
  • Gameplay: no gameplay reveal or hands-on impressions were confirmed.

How the headline phrase should be read

The column title, “Gamers are telling us what they have always told us,” is the headline of Takahashi’s interview piece. The sentence it comes from and the speaker who said it were not verified, so it should not be credited to Hight or Asmussen as a direct quotation. Readers who want the exact wording should consult the full GamesBeat column.

What to watch for next

A reveal would most likely come through Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro or Giant Skull channels, or at a major showcase. Any future announcement should state the title, platforms, release window and whether the game is tied to a specific D&D setting. Until then, the verified facts are the publishing deal, the studio’s leadership, the genre and the platforms named at announcement.
