Western Illinois University’s announced public screening of Learning Hungry was scheduled for October 6, 2026, at Stipes Hall, room 121. The free event has passed; available reporting does not confirm whether it took place or how many people attended. The documentary focuses on food insecurity among college students and its effects on academic success, mental health and graduation.
What was the WIU screening?
WIU Professor Emily Shupe announced a free public viewing of Learning Hungry for Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 4 p.m. in Stipes Hall room 121. WGEM reported the same event details. Both accounts were published before the scheduled screening, and neither reports whether it ultimately occurred or what followed.
Shupe said she worked with Dave Miner, who was producing a documentary about food insecurity at universities across the United States. The film’s official site describes Learning Hungry as an initiative launched in September 2026 that combines student stories and data to examine the issue and responses ranging from policy to campus leadership. It also provides a full-film streaming link and screening resources.
What does the documentary address?
The film centers on food insecurity among college students, including its potential effects on students’ academic progress, mental health and likelihood of graduating. Its campus focus connects the national issue to practical questions about how universities identify students’ needs and respond.

The documentary website displays a 41% figure, but the page reviewed does not identify a study or date for that statistic. It should not be treated as a directly comparable finding to WIU’s local survey results.
What did WIU’s campus survey find?
In a 2026 commentary for Tri States Public Radio, Shupe described a survey developed in 2017 with dietetic students for Macomb-campus students. Almost 700 students responded. Shupe reported that 50% identified as food insecure and 20% said lack of food had caused their grades to drop. These are figures from the WIU survey as she recounted it, not estimates of food insecurity nationally.

How did the WIU Food Pantry begin?
Shupe said the campus pantry opened in March 2018 in a ticket booth near Hanson Field, following students’ work investigating food insecurity. She reported that 26 students visited on opening day. As it grew, the pantry moved to Horrabin Hall.
Shupe describes the pantry both as a food resource and as a learning opportunity for students. In WGEM’s September 29, 2026, report, she said the work gives students a chance to conduct research, apply classroom lessons in real situations and develop empathy.

What service figures have been reported?
WGEM quoted Shupe on cumulative pantry service figures: by the end of the prior year, the pantry had served 7,100 students and distributed 31,000 pounds of food. By September 1, 2026, those reported totals had reached 7,700 students and 32,000 pounds. The report does not establish that these figures represent unique people served in each year, so they should not be read as annual counts of distinct users.
WGEM also reported that the pantry is supported by grants and donations. Its September 2026 story described an $18,000 grant from Dot Foods: $4,500 for food through a Feeding America program and $13,500 in store credit at Dorothy’s Market in Mount Sterling, Illinois. The report does not indicate that this grant is recurring.
