The Associated Press review gives more attention to the expedition’s human stakes: competing ambitions, commercial clients, national pride, mounting pressure and the physical danger of the climb. It presents those elements as forces that shape the story, not simply as background to an attempt at a record.

What did the AP review say?
In its October 5, 2026 review, the Associated Press gave the film three out of four stars and called it engrossing and sobering. The review describes a story in which the risks of extreme mountaineering intersect with competition, commercial pressure and grief. Those are the AP reviewer’s judgments; one review does not establish a wider critical consensus.
The AP reports a runtime of 98 minutes. Its account also notes the documentary’s self-questioning moments around filming in dangerous conditions. Filmmaker Elia Saikaly says in the review: “I had gone overboard. What am I doing right now? Nobody wants to see a camera.”

The film’s premise is a bid for a first winter ascent of K2, but the AP review emphasizes the pressures surrounding that goal. Climbers’ individual ambitions, commercial expedition clients and national pride meet in an environment where conditions make the consequences immediate. The result, as the reviewer describes it, is a story about people under strain as much as a test of endurance.
The AP review also includes an unnamed climber’s reflection: “Mountaineering is not only a discovery of the mountain – it’s a discovery of yourself.” The review does not identify the speaker, so the line should not be attributed more specifically.
