Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos is a two-part HBO Original documentary directed by Alex Gibney. It is a production history: how David Chase’s idea became The Sopranos, from the inspiration and pilot through the show’s production and its controversial finale. For fans who want to understand how the series was written, cast and made, it is a strong pick. It is not a new season, and it does not settle the show’s interpretive arguments.
What the documentary covers
Warner Bros. Discovery describes the film as taking viewers into the writers’ room, from the pilot to the finale. The first part’s synopsis on Apple TV is more specific about its starting point: David Chase’s New Jersey background, a script inspired by his mother and by the local “wise guys” he grew up around, and the casting of the pilot.

The distributor says the film combines show clips, early audition videos and behind-the-scenes footage. Those three elements are the main reason the documentary works as a fan companion. Audition tapes show how actors were first read against the characters, and the production footage shows the show being built rather than simply praised in retrospect.
Who appears
| Group | People named in the distributor’s description |
|---|---|
| Creator | David Chase |
| Writers and producers | Robin Green, Terence Winter, Frank Renzulli |
| Former HBO executives | Chris Albrecht, Carolyn Strauss |
| Cinematographer | Alik Sakharov |
| Cast | Michael Imperioli, Drea de Matteo, Lorraine Bracco, Steven Van Zandt, Edie Falco |
| Archival interviews | Nancy Marchand, James Gandolfini, Tony Sirico |
The mix matters. Chase and the writers speak to the process of building the stories, while the cast and crew speak to what the show looked and felt like on set. The archival interviews add voices that are no longer available to be asked new questions, so the film works partly as a record.

Format, premiere and release dates
The film is a two-part HBO Original documentary, produced by Ophelia Harutyunyan and Gibney, with Jigsaw named as the production company. Dates differ depending on whether they refer to a festival, the network or a streaming storefront, so the table below separates them.
| Event | Date | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| World premiere screening at the Beacon Theatre, New York, followed by a conversation moderated by Gibney | Scheduled for June 13, 2024 | Tribeca Festival announcement, 2024, tied to The Sopranos‘ 25th anniversary |
| HBO debut | Saturday, September 7, 2024, 8:00 p.m. ET | Warner Bros. Discovery announcement, 2024 |
| Part 1 on Apple TV, US storefront | September 8, 2024 | Apple TV platform listing; a storefront date, not a change to the HBO broadcast date |
| Release date shown on Rotten Tomatoes | September 7, 2024 | Rotten Tomatoes listing |
The Tribeca listing also named the participants in the post-screening conversation: Chase, Terence Winter, and cast members Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Aida Turturro, Annabella Sciorra, Robert Iler, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Drea De Matteo, Steve Schirripa, Kathrine Narducci and Dominic Chianese. That event was scheduled as a festival screening, so it is best read as background to the film’s launch rather than a public release.
Is it worth watching for Sopranos fans?
Yes, if your interest is the making of the show. The film is strongest on writing, casting and production. It is less useful if you want a fresh analysis of what the show means, or a verdict on its ending.
Where it fits well
- Viewers who want to see how the pilot’s ideas were developed in the writers’ room.
- Fans interested in casting, including early audition footage.
- Viewers who want the creator’s own account of the show, alongside cast and crew perspectives.
Where expectations may need adjusting
- Viewers looking for a balanced adjudication of every interpretive debate about the show’s conclusion. The film is a production history, not a verdict.
- Viewers who expect every main character to receive equal screen time. Some audience reviewers said the balance between characters was uneven.
- Viewers who prefer a faster pace. Some audience reviewers described the pacing as slow.
Critical and audience reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, accessed October 8, 2026, the film showed a 100% Tomatometer from 23 critic reviews and a 93% Popcornmeter from fewer than 50 audience ratings. Those figures are a snapshot taken on that date, and the audience sample is small, so treat the audience score as indicative rather than definitive.

- THE SOPRANOS stars James Gandolfini in a career-making performance as Tony Soprano, a Mafia leader who is having trouble dealing with his mother and family and so starts to see a shrink. The terrific supporting cast features Edie Falco as Tony's conflicted wife, Carmela; Lorraine Bracco as Tony's put-upon psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi; Michael Imperioli as loose-cannon Christopher Moltisanti; St
The site’s critics’ consensus, which is Rotten Tomatoes editorial copy rather than a statement by any named person, reads: “A thorough dissection of The Sopranos that gleans insight into both its production process and creator David Chase himself, Wise Guy is essential viewing for fans of one of television’s landmarks.”
Audience comments on the same page praised the audition and behind-the-scenes footage. Others criticised the pacing or said some characters received less attention than they wanted. Those comments reflect individual viewers, not a measured survey.

Where to watch it (United States)
JustWatch’s US listing, checked October 6, 2026 across 374 services, showed the documentary available through the following routes. Availability is specific to the US and can change, so confirm before you buy or subscribe.
- Subscription: HBO Max, and HBO Max through the Amazon Channel.
- One-time digital purchase or download: Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home.
Two practical points decide which route suits you. The first is whether you already have an HBO Max subscription, which makes the subscription route the simpler choice. The second is whether you want both parts together, since a purchase may suit viewers who want to watch in one sitting.

Runtimes differ across listings. Apple TV lists Part 1 at 1 hour 11 minutes and rates it TV-MA, while JustWatch lists a 79-minute runtime for the title overall. The two sources are likely counting differently, so check the runtime on the storefront you use.
Limits of the film
The documentary is built around access to David Chase and the people who made the series. That access is its value and also its boundary. It explains how decisions were made and how the show came together. It does not provide a definitive reading of the ending or of the characters’ motives, and it is not a substitute for the series itself.
Viewers who have not seen The Sopranos may find the references less clear, because the film assumes familiarity with the show’s storylines and characters.
