If Wirecast is using too much CPU during a continuous YouTube stream, first reduce the work it must render and encode: lower the document canvas and destination resolution, then consider lowering frame rate. Telestream recommends treating sustained CPU above 60% as a warning sign for dropped frames—not as a guaranteed failure threshold. Check YouTube’s stream health and your upload capacity separately so a network problem is not mistaken for an encoder overload.
Confirm that CPU is the problem
Watch Wirecast’s system CPU display while the actual production is running, including its normal sources, graphics, effects, and any local recording. Note whether CPU remains high and whether Wirecast drops frames or the output stutters. The load from an idle or simplified scene may not represent the live workload.
Telestream says maintained system CPU usage above 60% increases the likelihood of dropped frames. Treat that as a caution line, not a promise that a system below it is safe: the support FAQ uses inconsistent threshold wording, and no official source establishes a CPU percentage that guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Telestream’s Wirecast technical specifications and Wirecast FAQs provide the relevant guidance.
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU when locally encoded video or audio looks or sounds poor. If the encoded output appears healthy but viewers still have problems, check the outbound connection and YouTube’s stream-health status instead. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide distinguishes these checks.

Reduce Wirecast’s rendering and encoding workload
Lower the canvas and destination resolution
- In Wirecast, open Output > Canvas Setting and reduce the document canvas size. Telestream gives 1280Ă—720 as an example.
- Inspect each YouTube output destination and choose a lower-resolution encoding preset if the current output is higher than the stream needs.
- Test both changes together and separately. Canvas size and destination encoding resolution are distinct; reducing only the destination resolution may leave substantial rendering work if the canvas and production remain demanding.
Menu labels can vary by Wirecast release. Choose the resolution that meets the needs of the program: documentary footage with fine detail, small text, or intricate graphics may need more resolution than a mostly static feed.
Lower frame rate when the content permits
Telestream notes that 60 fps increases CPU use and that lowering canvas frame rate and/or streaming resolution can reduce it. If the program is mostly static, test 30 fps and inspect movement, scrolling text, and transitions. Keep 60 fps only if the smoother motion matters to viewers and the full workload can sustain it.

Disable Live GPU Accelerated Icons
Try turning off Live GPU Accelerated Icons under Preferences > Shot Display, the preference Telestream specifically identifies in its FAQ. Its effect depends on the production and software version, so compare CPU use and output behavior before and after rather than assuming it will resolve the overload.
Test hardware encoding only if your system supports it
A compatible hardware encoder may shift some encoding work away from the CPU, but availability and results depend on the computer, operating system, Wirecast release, and production. Telestream lists Intel Quick Sync support when the CPU includes a Quick Sync core, NVIDIA NVENC when a supported NVIDIA GPU is present, and Apple hardware-accelerated H.264 support. YouTube also identifies hardware encoders as an option for higher-production setups.

Compare software and hardware encoding with the complete production active. Watch CPU and GPU load, output quality, bitrate behavior, encoder errors, and stability; adopt a setting only if the results suit the stream. A hardware option is not guaranteed to work better on an unknown system.
Match YouTube output settings to the stream
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than carrying a bitrate over from a different output. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Codec availability in Wirecast depends on the installed release and machine.

These are YouTube recommendations for the specific H.264 combinations shown, not universal settings for other codecs or frame rates. Lowering bitrate by itself should not be treated as a direct CPU fix: resolution, frame rate, encoder implementation, and scene composition all affect workload. Measure outbound upload capacity under conditions representative of the stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total output bitrate. Network capacity is a separate constraint from Wirecast’s CPU load: reducing encoding work may not fix an unstable connection, and more upload bandwidth will not solve local rendering overload.

- High CPU, encoder errors, or local stutter: reduce canvas/output resolution or frame rate, review the production workload, and test supported hardware encoding.
- Encoder output appears healthy, but viewers see buffering or interruptions: inspect YouTube stream health and test outbound bandwidth against the full bitrate with the recommended headroom.
YouTube advises testing with representative sound and motion before starting the stream. Its streaming tips cover the upload margin.
Prepare Wirecast for unattended operation
- Run the complete project for an extended test before relying on it continuously. Include the normal video sources, graphics, audio, output settings, and local recording if you use one.
- Monitor Wirecast CPU and YouTube stream health during the test; check for dropped frames, encoder errors, reconnects, and viewer-facing quality problems.
- If recording is part of the workflow, verify that the local archive is being written and can be played back.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping while the stream is expected to run. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 user guide says Wirecast does not prevent the computer from entering sleep mode; confirm the sleep setting in the installed operating system and current software. The cited guide is for Wirecast 16, so do not assume its steps match every later release.
No particular computer, CPU percentage, or configuration is established as a guarantee of failure-free 24/7 operation. If the changes above do not create headroom, gather Wirecast diagnostics and identify the specific machine, version, sources, canvas, destination settings, effects, recording workload, and thermal conditions before considering hardware changes.
