Windows VPS vs. a Spare PC for Keeping a YouTube Channel Live 24/7

A spare PC can work if it sustains your OBS settings and home upload; a Windows VPS is viable only when its encoding, network, Windows, and total cost are verified.

Short answer: A spare Windows PC is a sensible starting point if it can sustain your actual OBS workload and your home upload connection is reliable. A Windows VPS can move streaming off your home computer and internet connection, but only if the specific plan provides Windows, adequate encoding capacity, enough sustained upload, and acceptable total cost. Neither choice guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

If you want prerecorded videos to keep looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is another option: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live from the cloud.

What matters more than VPS versus PC

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, the setup must keep producing an encoded video and deliver it reliably to YouTube. Compare the real workload and operating conditions, not just a computer’s advertised specifications or a VPS label.

  • Encoding: Can the machine sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and OBS scene?
  • Upload: Can the connection deliver the stream bitrate consistently, rather than just briefly reaching a headline speed?
  • Availability: Will the computer, power, and network remain available, and what will you do if the stream stops?
  • Cost and effort: Include power and maintenance for a local PC, or Windows licensing, traffic terms, and any encoding charges for a VPS.

There is no established comparison showing that VPSs or spare PCs have better uptime, lower lifetime cost, or fewer failures in general. The answer depends on the particular PC, home connection, and VPS plan.

  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.

Can a spare PC run OBS all day?

Check the Windows and hardware requirements

OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Those are baseline compatibility requirements, not proof that a machine can sustain your particular stream. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.

OBS supports hardware encoding options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, subject to compatible hardware and drivers. Hardware encoding generally shifts work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and may reduce CPU performance impact; check what your PC and installed drivers actually support. See OBS hardware encoding.

Account for the home setup

A spare PC still relies on your home power and internet connection. Consider whether the machine can remain powered and maintained, whether the network stays stable, and whether you have a plan for outages or software problems. The cost calculation should include incremental electricity and any hardware or backup-power expense. No measured power consumption or local electricity price is established here, so estimate those for your own equipment and location.

Can I use a Windows VPS to stream to YouTube 24/7?

Potentially, but “Windows VPS” alone does not establish suitability. Before paying, verify the current plan documentation or ask the provider about each of these items:

  • Windows support: Confirm that Windows is available on the plan and clarify any licensing cost.
  • Encoding capability: Check whether the workload can be sustained by the allocated CPU, or whether compatible GPU encoding is available. Do not assume a virtual CPU is equivalent to a GPU hardware encoder.
  • Network capacity: Confirm sustained upload capacity and reachability of YouTube’s ingest service.
  • Traffic terms: Check included data, transfer limits, and charges that could apply to a continuous stream.
  • Operations and recovery: Understand how you will administer the remote machine and what happens if the VM, software, or stream fails. Do not treat a provider’s general availability wording as a guarantee for your YouTube stream.
  • Total cost: Add the recurring plan price, Windows licensing, bandwidth or traffic charges, and any GPU fees.

No provider-specific VPS plan, current price, or uptime guarantee is established here. Verify the details for the exact plan you are considering.

Compare the two setups against your needs

Factor Spare Windows PC Windows VPS
Encoding Test whether its CPU or compatible GPU and OBS scene can sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, and frame rate. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU impact if supported by the hardware and drivers. Verify actual CPU or GPU encoding capability for the plan; do not assume a generic virtual CPU matches a hardware encoder.
Upload path Depends on the stability and upload capacity of your home connection. Test at the intended bitrate and monitor YouTube stream health. Depends on the provider’s sustained network upload, reachability of YouTube’s ingest, and traffic limits. Verify plan terms.
Availability The PC, home power, and home connection need to remain available. No resulting uptime figure is established. Remote hosting moves the workload off your personal computer, but no provider-specific uptime or recovery guarantee is established.
Cost Consider incremental electricity and any hardware or backup-power costs, against using equipment you already own. Your consumption and local electricity price determine the result. Consider the plan, Windows licensing, bandwidth or traffic, and GPU charges. Verify current costs with the provider.
Operations You maintain the PC, OBS, and local connection; test the stream and monitor its health. You administer a remote machine and must verify Windows, encoder access, network capacity, and recovery behavior.

How to choose: test the real stream first

  1. Define the stream. Set the target resolution and frame rate, identify how complex the OBS scene is, and choose the encoder you intend to use.
  2. Check the spare PC. Compare it with OBS’s Windows requirements, check whether a supported hardware encoder is available, and run a realistic test stream. Basic compatibility does not prove it will perform adequately for hours.
  3. Set a bitrate and test the connection. YouTube recommends these H.264 encoder bitrates: 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 1080p60, 7 Mbps for 1440p30, and 8 Mbps for 1440p60. They are encoder recommendations, not proof that an internet connection with that advertised upload speed will be stable. YouTube recommends choosing a quality the connection can reliably support, testing the connection and stream before going live, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  4. Use YouTube’s recommended delivery settings. YouTube recommends CBR for live encoder bitrate and RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest. Configure OBS and your YouTube stream settings accordingly, then confirm the test stream’s health in YouTube Studio.
  5. Validate a VPS before committing. Confirm Windows, sustained encoding and upload capacity, traffic terms, and total cost for the exact plan. If those details are unclear, the plan is not yet a verified alternative.
  6. Choose on observed fit. Prefer the option that passes a realistic test at your intended settings and whose ongoing cost and maintenance are acceptable. Neither setup should be described as failure-proof.

Copyright and keeping a channel live

A technically stable stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its content. Before looping a recording or playlist, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable rules. A VPS or spare PC does not change those obligations. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help you review rights-related considerations before streaming.
