First identify what VLC is playing: local video files, YouTube URLs, or a stream supplied by another tool. The fix depends on that path. If playback stops exactly when a video ends, check that VLC has another item queued and that its repeat mode matches your goal; if it stops mid-video, investigate the current file or stream instead. A playlist setting cannot make an unavailable URL or failed stream playable.
Find out what VLC is playing
These three setups can look similar in a playlist, but they fail for different reasons:
- Local files: VLC reads video files stored on your computer. A missing, moved, or unreadable file can break the sequence.
- YouTube URLs: VLC or an extractor may try to fetch each video from YouTube. The VOD must still be accessible, and the extractor must still work with YouTube.
- A stream piped through yt-dlp: yt-dlp can send media output to VLC, but that is a stream handoff, not the same as putting a stable local file in a queue. An ended stream or extractor error can stop playback.
Note whether the stop happens mid-video or precisely at its end, and whether the entry is a file path or URL. That distinction will narrow the cause before you change settings.
If playback stops at the end of a video
Check VLC’s queue and repeat mode
- Open the playlist in VLC. A VLC 3.0.x third-party guide gives Ctrl+L as the shortcut; shortcuts and interface details can differ by version.
- Confirm that the playlist actually contains the next item and that its file or URL is still valid.
- Check VLC’s repeat control. Repeat All cycles through the list; repeat-one repeats the current item. Choose the behavior you want, and check the installed VLC version if the control or wording differs.
If there is no next item, repeat mode cannot create one. Add the intended video or repair the entry before expecting playback to continue.

Check whether the playlist is actually in YouTube
If you are watching in YouTube rather than VLC, use YouTube’s own Loop control for the playlist. YouTube also has a separate control for looping one video. Those controls govern YouTube playback; they do not set the repeat behavior of a separate VLC queue.
If VLC stops in the middle of a video
For a local file
- Check whether the file still exists at the listed path and opens on its own in VLC.
- Try another known-good local file. If it plays through, focus on the original file or playlist entry rather than the queue’s repeat setting.
- If you moved the video or playlist, check the saved paths. A third-party VLC 3.0.x guide notes that saved playlists can use absolute paths, which may no longer resolve after files are moved.
For a YouTube URL or yt-dlp stream
- Open the VOD in YouTube to confirm it remains accessible and has not ended or been removed.
- Look for an error from VLC or the extractor. An error fetching a URL points to the source path, not to VLC’s repeat setting.
- If you use yt-dlp to pipe output to VLC, check its current output and playlist documentation and the error it reports. YouTube compatibility and restrictions can change, so a previously working URL workflow is not a guarantee of continuous playback.
yt-dlp documents both piping output to VLC and handling playlists, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted continuation when a source ends or an extractor fails. Its general command form is yt-dlp [OPTIONS] [--] URL [URL...].

Use one test to separate queue problems from source problems
Play one known-good local file, then observe whether it reaches the end and advances when another local file is queued. If local files advance but YouTube-derived entries stop, concentrate on URL availability or extractor compatibility. If local files also stop, recheck the queue, repeat mode, individual entries, and VLC version. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that either setup is fault-free.
Choose the playback path that fits the rerun

Troubleshoot without obscuring the cause
- Stops exactly at an item boundary: check whether another item is queued and whether repeat mode is set to Repeat All or repeat-one as intended.
- Stops mid-video: check whether the local file opens or the URL remains accessible; inspect any VLC or extractor error.
- A local playlist stopped working after files were moved: verify the saved paths and update the playlist entries if needed.
- YouTube entries fail while local videos play: investigate the URL or extractor path rather than changing VLC repeat behavior.
- You cannot tell which path is failing: record the VLC version, whether the stop is mid-video or at the end, the entry type, and the displayed error before changing more settings.
Change one thing at a time. No available evidence establishes a success rate for these fixes or a single cause for every playlist stoppage.
