The encoder supplies the live video; this is not the same as uploading a playlist of regular videos. Before launch, clear the rights to every game recording and audio track, test the stream, and plan for YouTube’s archive limits: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be saved as an archive.
What you need for a 24/7 chess VOD stream
- Chess recordings you own or are authorized to stream and archive, including permission for any music, commentary, overlays, or other third-party material.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a broadcast created in YouTube Live Control Room.
- An encoder that can play your video files or a playlist continuously and send the output to YouTube. Chess.com identifies OBS and Streamlabs as software options for streaming chess content: Chess.com streamer guidance.
- A computer and internet connection that can remain available if you use a local encoder. Keep upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom: YouTube streaming tips.
- A separate local archive plan if you need your own copy or want to protect against YouTube not capturing a long broadcast.
Set up the broadcast and encoder
- Create a YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a live broadcast. Use the stream settings supplied for that broadcast.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or recording.
- Build the chess playlist. Add the VOD files as media sources or use a playlist feature in the encoder. Configure the playlist to repeat, and check how the encoder handles the end of one file and the start of the next. Remove dead air or unintended desktop content between videos.
- Set the video and audio output. Pick a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate the computer can encode and the connection can sustain. Use a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval where available; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and verify that the board is readable, audio is present and correctly leveled, the next VOD starts as expected, and the watch page opens for an intended viewer.
- Check stream health before relying on it. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the local recording is growing if you are making a backup. Keep the test running long enough to observe a playlist transition.
- Start the public broadcast. Confirm the title, description, visibility, and rights status, then start the encoder and verify that the live watch page is showing the intended feed.
Choose stable YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not longer than four. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The following are YouTube’s recommended bitrate values for the listed profiles, as accessed on October 3, 2026; the guide can change: YouTube encoder settings.

These are platform recommendations, not a promise that your connection or encoder will sustain them. A chessboard is visually static much of the time, so a higher resolution is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or buffering. Choose a setting that keeps the board and notation legible, then test it under the actual upload conditions. Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom over the total bitrate, including audio and any additional stream data.
Protect the archive and viewer rewind
Do not assume one continuous stream will become a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours: YouTube live stream archive guidance and YouTube DVR guidance.

- If YouTube archives or rewind matter, consider ending and restarting broadcasts before the 12-hour boundary. This is a precaution based on YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee that any restart schedule will preserve every archive.
- Keep local source files and, if practical, a separate local recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.
- Make sure the local recording has enough disk space for the planned run and check that the recording file is actually growing.
- Tell viewers what to expect if you use separate broadcasts, since restarting creates a new live session rather than extending the old one.
Clear rights to every chess VOD and audio track
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use the live content on YouTube, including in an archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” See YouTube’s livestream terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; unresolved content can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even with a license, a live feed may still be interrupted unless the channel is on the relevant rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Keep permission records and ask the content owner about allowlisting when applicable: YouTube live-stream copyright guidance.

Chess.com’s creator guidance says community members may stream or post their games subject to its community policy, but may not stream or post its paid content, including lessons and videos. It also warns creators not to imply Chess.com sponsorship or endorsement: Chess.com community policy. That guidance does not grant rights to another creator’s VODs, tournament broadcasts, music, or third-party overlays; clear those separately.
Local encoder or cloud operation?
A local encoder gives you direct control over sources and transitions, but the computer, power, encoder, and internet connection must remain available. If any of those stop, the feed can stop. A cloud service avoids leaving a home computer running, but verify that its workflow supports your intended uploaded videos, playlist, and YouTube stream before relying on it.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that the broadcast is selected in Live Control Room, that the encoder has the matching server URL and current stream key, and that the encoder is actually streaming. If needed, reset the key in YouTube and replace it in the encoder.
- Preview is black or stuck: Confirm the intended media source is active, the file path is valid, and the playlist is not paused or waiting on a missing file. Test the source locally before restarting the broadcast.
- Board text is hard to read: Check the source video’s native resolution and the encoder output. Try a higher sustainable resolution or a different VOD; do not raise bitrate beyond what the connection and encoder can maintain.
- Video buffers or frames drop: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the connection is stable, check competing upload traffic, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Verify stream health again after changing settings.
- Audio is missing or mismatched: Check that the right audio track is enabled and that the source is not muted. Listen to the test from the YouTube watch page rather than relying only on encoder meters.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Identify the matched segment, remove or replace material you do not have rights to use, and resolve any licensing or allowlisting issue with the rightsholder before restarting.
- No complete archive appears: Check the broadcast duration first. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; use the local source or backup recording and consider shorter planned broadcasts if platform archives matter.
FAQ
Can I stream prerecorded chess videos as a YouTube livestream?
Yes. An encoder can send a continuous feed made from prerecorded videos. YouTube’s API documentation uses a 24/7 feed as an example of a live broadcast: YouTube Live broadcasts API.
Will YouTube save my livestream?
It may automatically archive a stream shorter than 12 hours, but YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep your own recording if preserving the full program is important.
