Willow Shields, who played Prim in The Hunger Games films, publicly said on Instagram that she was being blackmailed and extorted over private nude photos of herself. She then chose to post one of the images herself. The account is Shields’s own, as reproduced by news outlets; the threat, the person behind it, and any police action have not been independently confirmed.
What Shields reportedly said
According to text of her Instagram post reproduced by PerthNow, Shields wrote that she was “being blackmailed and extorted for nude photos of myself, something private that was never meant to be shared with the whole world.” Her post said someone had threatened to send the images to her friends, family and the internet.

Shields also said she had reported the person and the case to the FBI. Reports of the post are secondary: PerthNow, UNILAD and VT all describe it, and VT reports that she was 22 at the time and posted on a Sunday. Those details are background only and do not confirm the allegation.
Why she posted the image herself
The explanation Shields gave, as reported, is that she shared the picture to take control of a situation in which she was being threatened, and to make a statement about people affected by revenge porn and nude leaks. UNILAD also attributes the solidarity motive to her. Both reports present this as her reasoning, not as a finding about her motives by any third party.
#1 Best Overall
Readers should note that this is a deliberate choice she describes, and that it removes the threat’s leverage only in the sense she intended. Once an image is public, it cannot be pulled back by the person who posted it, and the reports do not describe any step beyond the post itself.
What is and is not established
- Established by the reporting: Shields made the statements quoted above on Instagram, as reproduced by several outlets.
- Not independently verified: the original post itself, the identity of the person who made the threat, whether that person held additional images, and how any images were obtained, including whether hacking was involved.
- Not confirmed: that the FBI opened an investigation, what any investigation found, or what happened afterward. No named FBI spokesperson, investigator or other official has been quoted about this case in the reporting reviewed.
Revenge porn and blackmail: why the label needs care
The headline uses the term “revenge porn,” and the broader coverage frames the post as a protest against that kind of abuse. The reports themselves, however, describe an alleged blackmail and extortion threat. Those are different descriptions. “Revenge porn” usually refers to the distribution of intimate images without consent, often by a former partner, while blackmail describes demands made under the threat of distribution. Shields’s account uses the word “blackmailed,” and the articles do not establish which kind of conduct, or what relationship, is involved. Treating the story as a settled example of either category goes beyond the evidence.

Where the coverage comes from
The main sources are PerthNow, which reproduces the Instagram text; UNILAD, which reports the post and the attributed motivation; and VT, which adds Shields’s age and the day of the post. None of these has been checked against the original post in this article. If Shields or her representatives later give a fuller account, or if the FBI or another agency confirms anything, that should be treated as new information and weighed against what is reported here.
Anyone facing a similar threat can contact local police and, in the United States, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov, which accepts reports of online extortion.
