Season 4, episode 17 brings Amanda Wagner back in younger form during a dream sequence. The episode is a strong candidate for the season’s best because it puts emotional payoff and character development at the center of its story—not because any established audience ranking says it is number one.
Which fan favorite returns in season 4?
It is Amanda Wagner, played by Sonja Sohn. Season 4’s story has already dealt with Amanda’s death; episode 17 brings her into a dreamworld sequence in younger form. That framing makes the return more than a simple reappearance: it lets the episode revisit Amanda through Will’s perspective and the emotional weight of their relationship.
The episode is titled “Where’d You Come From, Little Angel?” and is identified as season 4, episode 17 in season 4 coverage. The premise is a meaningful distinction for viewers tracking the season: the premiere’s return of James Ulster is a separate story event, not Amanda’s episode 17 return.

Why this episode earns a “best yet” verdict
“Best” is a critical judgment, not a verified consensus or published ranking. The case for this episode rests on how its central character material gives the hour a clear emotional purpose. Amanda’s younger-form appearance makes the past feel active in the present, while the dream setting gives the show room to explore memory and loss without presenting the sequence as an ordinary return to the living world.
That focus also gives the installment a useful measure of success: its ongoing story matters most when it sharpens the characters rather than merely advancing plot. Amanda’s appearance connects the season’s events to Will’s inner life and gives the ensemble’s history fresh relevance. On those terms—emotional payoff and contribution to Will’s character arc—this is a persuasive high point. It is not possible to establish from the available episode coverage alone how it compares on direction, case construction, or pacing against every other season 4 installment.

How does Amanda’s return fit the season?
Episode 17’s Amanda storyline follows the season’s account of her death and uses a dreamworld appearance to bring her back into the narrative. The younger version is part of that sequence, rather than evidence that the character has resumed an ordinary present-day role.
Do not confuse this with James Ulster’s return in the season 4 premiere. They are different characters and different points in the season’s story. Keeping that distinction clear helps explain why Amanda’s episode feels like a reflection on loss and memory, not simply another returning-character plot.
