Triple H did not name Will Ospreay when he spoke about “the grind” during WrestleMania XL weekend in April 2024. Ospreay nevertheless took the remarks as aimed at him and answered on AEW Dynamite on April 10. In later comments, he explained why they had struck a nerve—and made clear he did not want the exchange to keep going.
What Triple H said during WrestleMania XL weekend
While promoting WrestleMania XL on The Pat McAfee Show, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H discussed performers who might prefer a lighter schedule. ComicBook.com quoted him saying: “if you’re not in it for the grind, at that point early in your career, you have no business being here.” The outlet framed the remarks as seeming to concern several AEW signings, but its account does not report Triple H naming Ospreay. ComicBook.com’s April 10, 2024 report provides the cited account of the remarks and Ospreay’s response.
Why Ospreay answered on AEW Dynamite
On the April 10, 2024 episode of AEW Dynamite, Ospreay addressed the idea that he was afraid of the grind and took a personal jab at Triple H. The promo was presented as a response to the WrestleMania-weekend comments. The distinction matters: the reported words were general; Ospreay’s response reflected his interpretation of them, not a confirmed direct address from Triple H.
What Ospreay said after the exchange
At AEW Dynasty
At the AEW Dynasty post-show media scrum on April 21, Ospreay said he believed the remarks were about him despite not being named: “Although I wasn’t mentioned by name, it was clearly about me.” He also said he did not want to keep mentioning people at WWE and called the episode an unnecessary example of wrestling tribalism. ComingSoon.net reported his comments on April 22, 2024.

In a May interview
In an interview transcribed by Fightful on May 25, Ospreay said, “I fucking like Triple H.” He also said hearing the comments had been difficult, noting that he had been respectful in his discussions with WWE. He described having his own objectives and said he had answered what he saw as a jab. Those remarks add context to the Dynamite promo: Ospreay could object to the comments while still expressing personal regard for Triple H. Fightful’s May 25, 2024 interview transcript records his explanation.

- Triple H’s reported remarks concerned the grind and a lighter schedule; the cited coverage does not say he named Ospreay.
- Ospreay interpreted the remarks as directed at him and responded on AEW Dynamite on April 10, 2024.
- In subsequent comments, Ospreay said he did not want to prolong public talk about WWE, while also explaining that the comments had been difficult to hear.
The available accounts establish the words attributed to Triple H, Ospreay’s interpretation, and his later explanation. They do not establish that Triple H explicitly targeted him. Keeping those points separate is the clearest way to understand why the promo became a wrestling-tribalism talking point—and why Ospreay later wanted to move on.
