His father, Charles Spencer, said in a 2015 interview that he would most likely leave his property to Louis. That is a stated intention—not proof of a completed transfer or a legally guaranteed inheritance.
Why Althorp is associated with Princess Diana
Althorp is the Spencer family home, not an estate Diana passed to her sons. The estate describes itself as the family’s home for more than 500 years: Althorp’s official site provides its history and visitor information.
Diana was the daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer and the sister of Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl. After her funeral service, her coffin was taken to Althorp for private interment, according to the Royal Family’s official biography. Her childhood and burial connect her closely to the estate, but do not make it an inheritance from her to Princes William and Harry.
What Charles Spencer has said about the estate
A 2019 Tatler report recounting Charles Spencer’s 2015 interview said he would “most likely leave his property to his son, Viscount of Althorp Louis Spencer.” The remark described his likely intention and the family’s inheritance tradition; it was not presented as a legal document. Tatler’s account is the source for that reported statement.

Later coverage has described Louis as the expected successor. The Standard’s 2025 profile and Vanity Fair’s 2025 account characterize him as the likely heir to Althorp.
Expected inheritance is not a confirmed transfer
The available public reporting supports saying Louis is expected to inherit Althorp, based on Charles Spencer’s stated intention and subsequent descriptions of him as successor. It does not establish that Louis already owns the estate or that a current will or other binding succession instrument guarantees a future transfer.

It is also important not to treat the estate and the earldom as interchangeable. The reports concern who is expected to inherit Althorp; they do not establish that succession to the title and ownership of the property are legally identical questions.
