What the 2027 prediction actually says
The “vanish by 2027” headline traces back to a MoffettNathanson investor note written by analyst Robert Fishman. TechRadar reported the forecast as recounted by Variety’s Brian Steinberg, who described a post on X. The quoted line is: “We expect HBO Max to essentially be shut down at the end of 2027.” Two details matter here. The word “essentially” is part of the quote, and the wording describes an expectation, not a decision. The full note and its assumptions were not available to the outlets reporting it, so the reasoning behind the date is not public in any verifiable form.
That makes the forecast a useful signal about how some investors read the merger, but not a company statement. No shutdown date has been published by HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery, or Skydance.
The merger that gives the forecast its context
The corporate event behind the speculation is real. The Associated Press reported that Paramount’s roughly $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on October 6, 2026, and that the combined company is known as Skydance. Skydance has said the two streaming services will unify “into a single service over time.” It has not given a timetable, and it has not named the final consumer-facing service.

“Over time” is the operative phrase. It signals intent to combine the platforms without committing to when, how, or under what name. That gap is where most of the speculation about HBO Max’s future lives.
The counter-signal from Skydance’s leadership
Skydance CEO David Ellison has addressed the HBO brand directly. AP quoted him as saying: “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” He added that the company wants HBO “to continue doing more of” what it already does, and that combining the platforms would let “all of our content … reach even a broader audience than we can do standalone.”

This is a stated view about the brand, not a commitment about the HBO Max app. A brand can survive as a name, a content label, or a tier while the standalone app disappears. Ellison’s comments are consistent with either outcome, so they should be read as a statement of intent rather than a guarantee.
What happens to the HBO Max name
AP reported that immediately after the deal closed, HBO Max and Paramount+ looked the same as before, and that the HBO Max name might survive in some form inside a unified product. Syracuse University professor J. Christopher Hamilton, quoted by AP, said: “I think it’s going to take some time for them to really, really lock in on what implemented changes will have the least amount of disruption to the consumer base, but also to the town.”

The name has already changed once. In May 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max would become HBO Max again that summer, saying the change would “further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering.” AP quoted then-WBD CEO David Zaslav describing the move as “bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media.” A brand that was renamed back to HBO in 2025 is clearly valued by its owners, which is one reason the question of whether the standalone name survives is genuinely open.
What subscribers should know right now
The official HBO Max FAQ says there are no immediate changes to the apps, subscriptions, pricing, or content, and that subscribers do not need to take any action now. That answers the practical question for the present. It does not answer what happens after an integration, which has not been scheduled.

Business context: why the service is not in obvious trouble
Warner Bros. Discovery’s shareholder letter dated August 6, 2026, covering the second quarter, reported that about 40% of global HBO Max subscribers were on the ad-supported tier at quarter end, up 11% year over year. The company also reported $512 million in streaming adjusted EBITDA for the quarter, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of nearly 17%, and said it expected subscriber-related revenue growth to stay healthy into 2027.
These are company-reported figures and an outlook from before the merger closed. They show that the service was growing and profitable on its own terms, which makes an abrupt shutdown less likely than a gradual integration. They do not decide how the brand will be organized after the merger.

The most useful distinction is between three separate claims that are often blended together:
- Current status: HBO Max is operating as a separate service, with no immediate changes announced.
- Announced intent: Skydance plans to unify HBO Max and Paramount+ into one service over time.
- Forecast: An analyst expects HBO Max to be effectively shut down by the end of 2027.
Only the first two have company backing. The third is a reported expectation.
