Shiloh Jolie legally dropped “Pitt” from her name in 2024. After turning 18, she asked a Los Angeles County court to change her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie, and the court granted the request in August 2024. The public reporting does not explain her personal reasons. Her attorney described the decision as independent and tied it to “painful events” without giving any detail, so the reason for the change is not publicly known.
What the court record establishes
The legal change is the part of this story that is documented. The timeline below uses the dates reported by the Los Angeles Times and ABC News in July and August 2024.

| May 27, 2024 | Shiloh turns 18, making her an adult who can file a name-change petition on her own behalf. | Los Angeles Times (July 22, 2024) and ABC News (August 19, 2024) |
| Late May 2024 | She petitions Los Angeles County Superior Court to change her legal name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. | Los Angeles Times (July 22, 2024) and Los Angeles Times (August 20, 2024) |
| July 2024 | A required legal notice of the name change runs in the Los Angeles Times. | Los Angeles Times (July 22, 2024) |
| August 2024 | The court grants the petition. The Los Angeles Times reports the outcome based on court documents its newsroom reviewed. | Los Angeles Times (August 20, 2024) and ABC News (August 19, 2024) |
Two things are settled by these reports: the name she requested and the fact that the court approved it. Reporting from the period describes the request as a standard adult name change, not as a dispute that remained open.
Why a newspaper notice appeared
Many readers saw the Los Angeles Times notice and assumed it was an announcement Shiloh placed herself. Her attorney, Peter Levine, pushed back on that framing. In a statement to the Los Angeles Times on July 22, 2024, he said that California law requires anyone changing their name to publish a legal notice, and that the notice was run in the newspaper because the law requires it.
#1 Best Overall
ABC News also described the publication as a California legal requirement. A notice of this kind is a procedural step in the petition process rather than a press release, so its appearance in print does not indicate a public statement from Shiloh about her reasons.
What her attorney said
Levine’s statement is the only direct account of the decision that appears in the reporting, and it comes from her representative, not from Shiloh. He described the decision as “independent and significant” and said it followed “painful events.” He did not say what those events were, and he did not elaborate on them.
When quoting that phrase, attribute it to her attorney and note that he gave no detail. Reporting does not establish what the “painful events” were, whether they involved her family, or whether they connect to the name change in any specific way.
Why the family background does not explain the change
Coverage of the name change routinely mentions the separation of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and the legal disputes that followed. That background is accurate context, and readers will reasonably connect it to the question. The reports cited here, however, do not link any particular dispute, allegation, or event to Shiloh’s decision. Presenting the family history as the cause would go beyond what the reporting supports.

What is and is not established
- Established: Shiloh asked to drop “Pitt” from her legal name after turning 18, the court granted the change in August 2024, and the newspaper notice was a legal requirement.
- Established as her attorney’s characterization only: the decision was independent and followed “painful events.”
- Not established: her personal motive, what the “painful events” were, and any causal link between the parents’ disputes and her choice.
- Time-limited: the reporting cited here dates from July and August 2024. It does not cover any later statements from Shiloh about the change.
Readers looking for a fuller explanation should treat any source that gives a specific reason as going beyond the documented record, unless that source quotes Shiloh herself.
