Coyote’s most memorable Road Runner traps turn elaborate plans into quick reversals: a painted road hides a missing bridge, a fake egg becomes a bomb-delivery robot, and Coyote is often the one caught in the blast. This is an editorial selection, not an official Warner Bros. ranking, chosen for visual surprise, inventive setup, and how satisfyingly each scheme rebounds on its maker.
How these traps make the gag work
The recurring setup is simple: Coyote devises an elaborate way to intercept the Road Runner, who escapes while the plan’s failure injures or humiliates its inventor. The mechanisms range from visual deception and mechanical contraptions to explosives and obstacles. The episodes below are ordered by editorial judgment, not by a studio ranking. Dates are the catalog listing dates; they should not be read as independently confirmed premiere dates.
10 memorable Road Runner traps
1. The painted road and missing bridge — “Going! Going! Gosh!”
In the catalog listing dated April 23, 1952, Coyote paints a continuation of the road where a bridge is out, hoping the Road Runner will follow the illusion. It is a clean example of the series’ visual humor: the trick is immediately legible, and the danger comes from the gap between what the painted scene suggests and what is actually there. The short also catalogs a disguise and an anvil dropped from a balloon among Coyote’s failed schemes. Episode listing.
2. The string-controlled rifles — “Zipping Along”
Dated September 14, 1953 in the catalog, this short gives Coyote a tangled plan involving rifles controlled by strings. Hypnosis and a field of mousetraps also fail to catch the Road Runner. The rifle setup earns its place for turning a supposedly precise device into another source of comic danger for the person operating it. Episode listing.

3. The glue-covered road — “Ready…Set…Zoom!”
The April 30, 1955 catalog entry includes glue spread across the road, a giant rubber band, and an outboard motor fitted to a wash tub. Glue is a wonderfully plain interception tactic: it asks the Road Runner to keep moving, then lets the pursuit itself create the problem. The short’s other devices escalate the same idea into oversized machinery. Episode listing.
4. The boulder catapult — “Zoom and Bored”
In this short, listed as September 4, 1957, Coyote tries a boulder catapult alongside a bottle of bees, a brick wall, and a harpoon gun. The catapult makes the list because its scale is so disproportionate to the target: Coyote builds a formidable launch mechanism to catch a bird who can simply outrun the plan. Episode listing.

5. The dehydrated boulder — “Scrambled Aches”
The catalog dates this short January 26, 1957. Coyote applies water to a dehydrated boulder, which grows; when he tries to lift it, it lands on him. This is one of the tightest reversals in the roundup: the device’s promised convenience becomes the exact reason the plan collapses. Episode listing.
6. The birdseed-and-spikes setup — “Run, Run Sweet Road Runner”
Listed as August 21, 1965, this short features a birdseed trap with spikes overhead. The bait-and-trap arrangement is familiar, but its cartoon logic is neatly visible at a glance: Coyote expects the Road Runner to follow the food into danger, while the scheme proves no more reliable than his other contraptions. A lightning rod disguised as a female Road Runner also fails. Episode listing.

7. The fake bird sanctuary — “Tired and Feathered”
The September 18, 1965 listing includes a propeller backpack, a rolling stone log, and a fake bird sanctuary with TNT disguised as a telephone receiver. The sanctuary is the standout because it disguises a dangerous device as a refuge. Its elaborate deception captures the series’ familiar irony: Coyote’s best-laid invitation is still part of a plan that turns against him. Episode listing.
8. The fake egg that becomes a robot — “Highway Runnery”
In the short listed December 11, 1965, Coyote hides a bomb in a fake egg. Instead of serving as a simple baited explosive, it produces a robot that walks over to Coyote and explodes. The reversal is the whole joke: the trap does not merely miss the Road Runner; it redirects its own threat toward its creator. Episode listing.

9. The disguised camera cannon — “Rushing Roulette”
The aired-order catalog lists this short as July 31, 1965. Among its many failed schemes are glue, a magnifying glass, an exploding piano, an anvil dropped from a helicopter, and a cannon disguised as a camera. The camera cannon is an especially good visual gag because it gives Coyote a cover story and a weapon in the same object—without making the outcome any less disastrous for him. Episode listing.
10. The steel wall and leg-building vitamins — “Stop! Look! And Hasten!”
The catalog dates this short August 14, 1954. Coyote’s attempts include a Burmese tiger trap, a pop-up steel wall, a motorcycle, and vitamins intended to build his legs. The wall and the vitamins make a fitting pair: one tries to stop the Road Runner with a physical barrier, while the other tries to improve Coyote’s ability to keep up. Both belong to the same comic contest between planning and speed. Episode listing.

What makes one trap stand out over another?
The strongest gags tend to balance three things: a setup the viewer can understand immediately, a mechanism more elaborate than the problem seems to require, and a reversal that lands squarely on Coyote. The painted road wins on visual simplicity; the fake egg-robot wins on surprise; the dehydrated boulder is especially efficient because the trap’s own behavior causes the payoff. Those are reasons for this particular ordering, not objective measures of quality.
