Wicked: For Good completes Jon M. Chu’s two-film adaptation of the stage musical with a sharper focus on propaganda, exclusion and the cost of choosing a side. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande remain its emotional center as Elphaba and Glinda, but the move from the first film’s rise to this story’s rebellion makes the experience less buoyant—and, at times, more emphatic. Whether that shift works depends on how much weight you want the Oz spectacle to carry.
What is Wicked: For Good about?
The film follows the stage musical’s second act. Elphaba is living in exile and has been publicly branded a threat; Glinda, by contrast, is celebrated in Emerald City as a symbol of goodness. Their friendship has fractured, but events surrounding a girl from Kansas force them back into each other’s lives as the future of Oz comes into focus. Universal’s official film page frames the conflict as Elphaba’s fight for truth and the women’s reckoning with their past.
The story’s central tension is not simply whether Elphaba can defeat those in power. It is whether the public stories told about her—and about goodness itself—can survive contact with the truth. That gives the sequel a more openly political shape than a straightforward fantasy adventure.
Does the darker second act make a stronger movie?
It makes a different one. The first film builds toward the conflict; For Good begins with its consequences. Exile, public image and resistance replace much of the earlier story’s discovery and ascent. That change gives the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda greater stakes: their choices now affect not only one another but also how Oz understands power and belonging.

The political allegory is also much closer to the surface. In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle found the film’s emphasis on empathy and multiculturalism stirring but at times heavy-handed. That is a useful way to describe the sequel’s risk: its themes can lend the spectacle moral urgency, yet some viewers may feel the film announces its meaning more plainly than it dramatizes it. Coyle also judged the second installment darker and less immediately catchy musically than the first. That is one critic’s response, not a consensus verdict.
My view is that the tonal shift is most persuasive when it stays tied to the two leads. Erivo and Grande give the conflict a personal center, so the film’s ideas about public masks and exclusion have faces and history. When the allegory takes over, the story can feel less nimble. The sequel’s success therefore rests less on matching the first movie’s buoyancy than on making the friendship’s consequences feel earned.

How does the film adapt the musical—and what is new?
This is the concluding film in the screen adaptation of Wicked, the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, itself based on Gregory Maguire’s novel. Schwartz is the musical’s composer and lyricist; Holzman wrote its book. For the film, Holzman and Dana Fox are credited with the screenplay, and Jon M. Chu directs. The principal cast includes Erivo as Elphaba and Grande as Glinda, alongside Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.
Schwartz wrote two songs new to the film:
- “No Place Like Home” is Elphaba’s song, associated with frightened animals fleeing Oz.
- “The Girl in the Bubble” gives Glinda a moment of recognizing how Morrible and Oz have used her.
As character songs, they offer the film room to develop each woman’s response to the crisis beyond the familiar material. Whether they become as memorable as the first installment’s best-known numbers is a matter of taste; the AP review, for example, sees the most immediately catchy songs as already behind the story.

Is Wicked: For Good as good as the first movie?
It depends on what you valued in the first. If you want the same sense of discovery and buoyant musical momentum, this darker, more rebellion-focused chapter may feel less satisfying. If you want the divided friendship, the political conflict and the consequences of Oz’s public narratives brought to the foreground, the sequel gives those elements more room.
At the time Rotten Tomatoes was accessed on October 4, 2026, it displayed a 66% Tomatometer from 357 critics’ reviews and a 92% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified audience ratings. How long is it, and is it appropriate for kids?
The Associated Press reports a running time of 137 minutes (2 hours, 17 minutes) and a PG rating for action/violence, some suggestive material and thematic material. The rating descriptors are a better guide than the label alone for families deciding whether the film suits a particular child.
Where can you watch Wicked: For Good?
Availability depends on country and can change. In US announcements, Universal said digital purchase and rental would begin December 30, 2025, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on January 20, 2026. The home release was also announced with a sing-along edition and bonus features including deleted scenes, a making-of feature, featurettes about the new songs and a director commentary. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s release announcement lists those formats and extras.
