Wicked Finally Explains a Scarecrow Moment in The Wizard of Oz, Nearly 86 Years Later

Wicked: For Good turns Fiyero into the Scarecrow after he appears in an armed guard. A critic says this could explain the Scarecrow's revolver in the 1939 film, but that link is interpretation, not confirmed by the filmmakers.

The odd moment is the Scarecrow carrying a revolver in the Haunted Forest sequence of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. In November 2025, Wicked: For Good offered a possible explanation for it. The film reveals that Fiyero, a character who appears earlier as part of an armed guard, is transformed into the Scarecrow by Elphaba’s spell. A critic at ComicBook.com read that plot point as a retrospective answer to the gun. That reading is an interpretation by the critic, not a statement from the filmmakers, and the film does not formally settle how the 1939 production intended the prop to be understood.

What the 1939 film shows

In the 1939 movie, Dorothy and her companions enter the Haunted Forest on their way to confront the Wicked Witch. The Scarecrow is seen carrying a revolver during that stretch, which is an incongruous object for a character who otherwise belongs to a storybook farm and a search for a brain. The gun has puzzled viewers for decades because nothing in the scene explains it.

ComicBook.com’s Spencer Perry, writing on November 21, 2025, ties the weapon to a cut “Jitterbug” dance sequence that was connected with weapons in that part of the film. Perry presents this as the movie’s production history. It is a separate matter from the explanation Perry then proposes through Wicked: For Good, and the two should be kept apart.

How the Wicked story reaches the 1939 film

TIME’s Megan McCluskey, also writing on November 21, 2025, lays out the source chain behind the franchise:

#1 Best Overall
  • L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the source for the original story.
  • Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which retells the story from the Witch’s side.
  • The 2003 stage musical, which carries Maguire’s version to a wider audience.
  • The film adaptations, of which Wicked: For Good is the most recent.

Maguire’s book and the musical are not the 1939 film, and neither is a direct prequel to it. The connection is one of shared characters and a shared world, which is why the link between the two can be read in more than one way.

The Fiyero-to-Scarecrow plot point

In Wicked: For Good, Fiyero is shown as part of an armed guard before Elphaba’s spell changes him into the Scarecrow. TIME reports this transformation as a plot reveal. ComicBook.com’s argument is that the guard’s firearms give the later revolver a character-based origin: the gun the Scarecrow carries in the 1939 film could be a leftover from the life he had before he was turned into straw and stuffing.

The argument works as a payoff because it attaches an object from the old film to a specific person in the new one. It does not rely on any on-screen statement that the revolver came from Fiyero’s guard. The link is inferred from two facts that the films present separately.

Three layers of evidence, and what each one supports

The explanation depends on keeping three kinds of claim separate. The table below shows what each one establishes.

What is and is not established

The plot point is real: Wicked: For Good makes Fiyero the Scarecrow. The link to the revolver is not. No filmmaker statement that has been reported ties the guard’s weapons to the 1939 prop, and none confirms that the 1939 production meant the gun to be read this way.

Director Jon M. Chu has spoken about the two timelines colliding. TIME quoted him saying, “I love that these two worlds get to collide in this movie.” That remark concerns the overlap between the stories in general. It is not a confirmation of this specific explanation.

The phrase “after 85 years” in the headline is a loose elapsed-time hook. The 1939 film and the November 2025 release are about 86 years apart, and the number is not a figure reported by a study or organization.

How to judge the explanation yourself

Watch the Haunted Forest sequence in the 1939 film first, then the armed-guard scenes and the transformation in Wicked: For Good. The fit is satisfying if you accept that the same object could travel between the two stories. It is weaker if you need the filmmakers to have planned it. Treat the connection as an engaging reading of two films that share a world, rather than a solved production mystery.

For a clearer picture of the original story, Baum’s 1900 novel is the earliest text in the chain, and it is the version that the 1939 film adapts in part. Read it for the characters and tone, and you will see how far the film and the musical have moved from it.

Within the franchise, the strongest evidence for the Fiyero link is the plot itself. The weakest part is the leap from a shared prop to a shared origin. Anyone writing about the gun should say so.
