Why Young Sheldon’s Series Finale Is Not George Sr.’s Funeral

The Young Sheldon finale does not end on George Sr.'s funeral. "Funeral" is the penultimate episode, and "Memoir" closes the series with Sheldon's move toward Caltech.

The series finale of Young Sheldon does not end with George Sr.’s funeral. The funeral is the penultimate episode, “Funeral,” and the show’s last episode is “Memoir.” CBS/Paramount announced the two-part finale for May 16, 2024, with part one titled “Funeral,” so the service and the ending were broadcast together but are separate episodes with different jobs. The creative choice behind that structure was to let the story move past grief toward hope rather than close on the service.

How the two-part finale is divided

CBS/Paramount’s announcement for the May 16, 2024 finale identified the first installment as “Funeral.” The second installment is “Memoir.” The split matters because the two halves do different work: one stays with the family’s loss, and the other looks ahead.

Installment Episode title What it covers
Part one (penultimate episode) “Funeral” TVLine’s cast interview describes the first half-hour as taking place almost entirely at George’s funeral.
Part two (series finale) “Memoir” Moves beyond the service toward Sheldon’s next chapter, including his move to California for Caltech.

Why the funeral sits before the ending

Placing the funeral in the penultimate episode gives the family room to grieve without making that grief the last image of the series. Looper’s report on showrunner Steve Holland’s interview says the writers chose a placement far enough from the finale to let George’s death land, without letting it overshadow the show’s remaining joy.

What the showrunner said about tone

Holland’s reported explanation centers on tone. Creator Chuck Lorre encouraged the writers not to leave viewers “wallowing in grief” and to make room for hope. Holland also said George’s death mattered because of its effect on the characters, especially Sheldon and Mary, so the story needed to show that impact without stopping there.

A line Holland gave Entertainment Weekly, reproduced by Looper, puts the decision directly: “Let’s give them a little bit of ramp out of it, not do that in the finale, and give the finale room to have a little bit more hope to it.” The quote reflects the writers’ stated intent for the finale, not an audience measure of how the ending was received.

The timeline from the funeral to “Memoir”

The order of events in the closing episodes runs as follows:

Rank #2
  1. George’s death. The loss is the event the family must absorb in the episodes leading up to the finale.
  2. The funeral in “Funeral.” The penultimate episode is built around the service, with the first half-hour set almost entirely there.
  3. A month after the funeral. Looper describes the family’s story picking up about a month later, which gives the characters distance from the immediate loss.
  4. The forward jump in “Memoir.” The finale moves toward Sheldon leaving for California and Caltech and jumps ahead to adult Sheldon, so the ending plays as an epilogue rather than a continuation of the funeral.

Those time gaps are the mechanism behind the writers’ choice. Each step moves the story further from the loss, which is why the show’s final episode does not return to the funeral.

Reading the finale correctly

  • “Funeral” is part of the finale event but not the series ending.
  • “Memoir” is the last episode and the one that closes the series.
  • The written creative rationale comes from Holland’s interview as reported by Looper and Entertainment Weekly; it describes the intent behind the structure, not a viewer-response figure.

Viewers who remember the funeral as the show’s end are conflating the penultimate episode with the finale, and the two episodes were scheduled as a single event.
