You Can See Everything is being campaigned for both Best Picture and Best Documentary at the 99th Academy Awards. That makes a Best Picture nomination possible, not confirmed: the Academy has not announced the nominations, and the film still has to satisfy the applicable eligibility requirements.
What the Best Picture campaign means
A24’s For Your Consideration page lists You Can See Everything in both the Best Picture and Best Documentary categories. That is evidence of a distributor campaign for consideration; it is not an Academy nomination or a guarantee that the film will appear on the final ballot. A24’s awards page
The Academy’s rules allow a film submitted in Documentary Feature to qualify in other categories, including Best Picture, if it meets the requirements for those categories. A documentary therefore is not disqualified from Best Picture simply because it is nonfiction. Whether this film qualifies and receives a nomination remains unresolved.
Why this film is drawing attention
Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the 2026 film centers on Elizabeth Holmes. A24 says Holmes invites a skeptical crew to document her in the 34 days before she is sent to prison; what begins as that assignment becomes a three-year journey. A24’s film page

- Pre-loaded with ISO 400 speed film with 27 exposures per camera
- Built-in 10’ flash range and a continuous flash switch
- 2 pack - Total 54 exposures
Film at Lincoln Center lists the film at 174 minutes and describes it as examining documentary objectivity and the boundary between fiction and nonfiction. That tension makes the category question especially visible, but the film’s style or subject does not by itself determine its Academy eligibility. Film at Lincoln Center’s NYFF listing
What the Academy rules allow—and require
Documentary status does not close the door
The Academy’s 99th Awards rules define a documentary feature as a theatrically released nonfiction motion picture addressing a subject creatively. They permit techniques such as partial reenactment when the emphasis remains on fact rather than fiction. The rules define a feature-length film as one longer than 40 minutes. - 📷 The included roll of Ultramax film will be either the Kodak Alaris packaging (pictured) or the Eastman Kodak packaging depends on availability.
- 📷 Film-saving: You can have twice as many images per roll. For example, a film roll with 24 exposures can yield around 48 half-frame photos - doubled!
- 📷 Lightweight and Easy-to-use: The pocket-size camera is light and tiny, and hence convenient for you to bring along daily. Since its instructions are simple, it is suitable for all analog hobbyists.
- 📷 Built-in Flash: Turning on the flash by adjusting the silver ring around the lens so that you can use KODAK EKTAR H35 during days and nights, outdoor and indoor.
The Academy has also stated that a film submitted in Documentary Feature may qualify for other categories, including Best Picture. Best Picture has its own conditions, however. The Academy’s current standards include an expanded theatrical run and meeting two of four representation and inclusion standards; documentary status alone does not show that a film meets them. The release date fits the awards-year window, but that is not the whole test
A24 lists October 16, 2026, as the film’s planned theatrical release. The Academy announced a January 1 through December 31, 2026 theatrical eligibility window for feature consideration at the 99th Awards, so the planned date falls within that calendar period. The available information does not establish that the film completed every qualifying exhibition or fulfilled all Best Picture requirements. The Academy’s 99th Awards rules announcement

Would a nomination make it the first documentary Best Picture nominee?
That claim should remain conditional. If You Can See Everything is nominated, it could be described as a historic first only after defining and verifying the relevant historical category and comparison set. The current campaign listing and eligibility rules do not establish the eventual nominees or settle that full historical question. For now, the precise statement is that the film is campaigning for Best Picture and could make history if nominated.

The key distinction is between campaign, eligibility, and nomination. A24 has publicly put the film forward for consideration in two categories. The Academy’s rules permit documentary features to seek recognition beyond Documentary Feature, but the film must meet each category’s requirements. The final nomination outcome is not established as of October 8, 2026, the date of the available awards-status information.
