Later accounts connect Ryder’s criticism of young actors’ messy, mattress-on-the-floor apartments to Hawke; the Rolling Stone passage those accounts point to did not name him. The disagreement was about lifestyle and what poverty should mean—not a documented feud over acting or on-set behavior.
What happened between Ryder and Hawke?
Ryder and Hawke worked together on Reality Bites. Later entertainment coverage has retold a story in which Ryder objected to Hawke’s living situation: he reportedly had a New York apartment with a mattress on the floor. Some versions say she stopped speaking to him after learning about it or visiting his home, but accounts differ, and the underlying visit and silence claims are not established by the sources available here.

The better-supported core is a disagreement over the “slacker” image: whether living in a bare, untidy apartment was an authentic sign of artistic depth or an affectation. That is a narrower claim than saying Ryder hated working with Hawke.
What Ryder said—and what she did not say
In a March 10, 1994 Rolling Stone cover story, “Winona Ryder Opens Her Diary,” Ryder criticized young actors who, despite being wealthy, lived in run-down apartments with books scattered around and mattresses on the floor. She argued that poverty is neither romantic nor cool, and cautioned against performing hardship to seem real or profound. The passage cited in later accounts does not identify Hawke by name.

That distinction matters: the link between Ryder’s comments and Hawke comes from later retellings, including Far Out Magazine and The Things, rather than an explicit accusation in the Rolling Stone passage. Ryder had also supported Hawke for the Reality Bites role; a Cheat Sheet headline described her explanation as “Ethan and I Have a Connection.” The story is therefore not simply one of an actress regretting a co-star she never wanted.
Hawke’s reported response
Later accounts also attribute a response to Hawke: “The bottom line is that I’m not a millionaire.” In those retellings, he objected that Ryder was assuming his finances matched hers, while acknowledging that he was doing well. The Things further says he wanted to emulate the city life of writer Henry Miller. The original interview or source for Hawke’s remarks was not identified in the accounts summarized here, so these details should be treated as secondhand rather than as a verified direct exchange.

How they spoke about each other later
At a 2019 Tribeca screening marking the film’s 25th anniversary, Hawke credited Ryder with helping him get the job and with changing his career’s trajectory. “Winona believed in me. Winona got me this job,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That public credit does not prove there was never tension, but it complicates the enduring-feud framing. The clearest account is of a reported clash over lifestyle and money, followed years later by Hawke’s acknowledgment of Ryder’s professional support.
