Buzbee also characterized the case as an attempt to intimidate or silence him and his clients. That was his description of the lawsuit, not a judicial finding. The Los Angeles Times account reported his response.

What happened to Jay-Z’s lawsuit against Tony Buzbee?

The case’s procedural path was:

  • November 18, 2024: The anonymous plaintiff sued Buzbee and his law firm in Los Angeles, alleging extortion and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
  • December 2024: Later court materials say Carter amended the complaint to identify himself and add defamation claims.
  • June 30, 2025: The trial court granted Buzbee’s anti-SLAPP motion.
  • September 9, 2026: The California Court of Appeal affirmed the order. The official docket records the opinion as filed and the order as affirmed, with costs on appeal to Buzbee.

The appellate outcome was an affirmance of the anti-SLAPP order. It should not be described as a court finding that the original extortion allegations were false. The opinion and the docket record the ruling and its status.

How this case relates to the Combs allegations

The lawsuit against Buzbee arose amid his public work representing people alleging misconduct by Sean Combs. But the California action involving Carter and Buzbee is separate from Combs-related civil cases and from other later litigation involving Carter and Buzbee. The parties and outcomes should not be conflated.
