ABC Family canceled The Lying Game in July 2013 and did not order a third season. Contemporary coverage points to modest audience figures as relevant context, but the network did not publicly give a specific reason in the reports reviewed.
What ABC Family confirmed
On July 16, 2013, Soap Opera Network quoted an ABC Family spokesperson: “I can confirm we are not moving forward with additional episodes of ‘The Lying Game.’” The decision ended the series after two seasons. The Los Angeles Times reported that Alexandra Chando, who played the twin leads, had announced the cancellation to fans.
How ratings fit into the explanation
Ratings are a plausible part of the story, but they are not a confirmed, complete explanation from ABC Family. The Broadcasting & Cable report put the series finale at about 1.1 million total viewers. The Los Angeles Times reported 1.11 million viewers for the episode, which aired March 12, 2013.
Broadcasting & Cable also compared that finale audience with the most recent episodes of two newer ABC Family summer series: Twisted had 1.6 million viewers and The Fosters had 1.8 million. Those are figures for the episodes cited in the report, not season averages. TVLine described The Lying Game as modestly rated and noted The Fosters was reaching new Nielsen highs. This gives a contemporary basis for viewing audience performance as a factor observers might consider, not proof that ratings alone caused the cancellation.

What is—and is not—known about the decision
The public statements and contemporaneous coverage establish that ABC Family declined to make more episodes. The reports cited here do not quote the network explaining its business reasoning. They do not establish a specific ratings threshold, budget problem, strategy change, contract issue, or creative disagreement as the cause.

The television series adapted Sara Shepard’s novels, as the Los Angeles Times noted, but the available reporting does not establish that the books continue the show’s unfinished television storyline. The series’ finale aired March 12, 2013; ABC Family’s July decision meant there would be no third season to continue it.
