At the 1993 Oscars, he went off script to criticize China’s human-rights record in Tibet; telecast producer Gil Cates then threatened to exclude Gere and two other presenters from future shows he produced. Gere did not present at the Oscars again until 2013, but the Academy press office later said it did not ban presenters.
What did Richard Gere say at the 1993 Oscars?
On March 29, 1993, Gere was presenting the nominees for art direction at the 65th Academy Awards. Instead of sticking to the scripted introduction, he used the moment to speak about China’s human-rights record and Tibet. GQ’s transcript records him saying there was “what a horrendous, horrendous humanrights situation there is in China, not only towards their own people but to Tibet as well.” He then addressed Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, urging him to “take his troops and take the Chinese away from Tibet and allow people to live as free independent people again.” GQ reproduces the planned introduction and the remarks; the transcript’s wording is preserved here as published.
The contrast was conspicuous: Gere’s scripted introduction was light wordplay about artists including Rubens, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Monet, Da Vinci and Degas. He abandoned that setup for a direct political appeal on the live telecast.
Who threatened to ban him—and what did the threat cover?
The documented threat came from Gil Cates, producer of the Oscars telecast, not from a publicly established Academy disciplinary process. In an April 1, 1993 report, Yardena Arar of the Los Angeles Daily News, republished by the Deseret News, said Cates threatened to ban Gere, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins from future awards shows he produced. Cates objected to presenters using their time to express political beliefs, calling it “rude and inappropriate and unacceptable behavior.” The contemporaneous Deseret News report describes the scope as shows Cates produced—not a permanent order covering every Academy ceremony.

Was Richard Gere officially banned by the Academy?
The available accounts do not establish a formal Academy-wide ban. In 2007, GQ reported that Gere had not been invited back to present by that point, but also quoted the Academy press office saying, “We don’t ban presenters,” and, “There’s no such thing as a ban.” That denial sits alongside Cates’s earlier public threat and Gere’s lengthy absence from the presenter role. It is therefore more accurate to call the episode a producer’s threatened exclusion, followed by a long gap, than a confirmed Academy sanction.
When did Gere return to the Oscars?
Gere returned to present at the Academy Awards in 2013, after not presenting at the ceremony for roughly two decades. The Independent’s 2025 account corroborates the return and reports that Cates said after the 1993 show that he would not invite Gere to a future show. The gap supports the common “20-year ban” shorthand, but it does not prove who made every invitation decision in every intervening year or why. The Independent’s 2025 report also recounts Gere’s later reflections on the incident.

In comments from a Variety interview reported by The Independent in December 2025, Gere said, “I didn’t take it particularly personally.” He explained that his intent was to oppose anger, exclusion and human-rights abuses, while holding to the idea that people can be redeemed. Those are Gere’s reflections as reported by The Independent; the original Variety interview was not separately reviewed.
